Shipboard Communications Cabling Technician

Job Summary Responsible for implementation, coordination, installation, and/or oversight of a wide variety of activities for complex network cable wiring systems for voice, data, and video. Responsibilities Use construction drawings, schematic diagrams, BICSI specification, EIA/TIA codes, and system-defined standards to move or install new communications infrastructure. Measure, cut, assemble, and install conduit, pathways or appropriate ceiling supports. Pull various types of cable according to pathways, install related structured cable components, and complete terminations. Use specialized testing devices and system-defined standards to test compliance requirements and document results. Ensure standard quality levels are met with respect to fire stoppage, construction regulations, EIA/TIA codes, and BICSI structured cabling standards. Lift, carry and move cable and equipment as required. Work with unshielded twisted pair, single and multi‑mode fiber optic, coaxial cable or equivalent. Use diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot problems, maintain lines, or repair cable. Install, maintain, and troubleshoot intra‑building fiber‑optic cables from IDF to wiring closets; terminate with all fiber‑optic connectors and manufacture and provide fiber patch‑cords. Maintain and troubleshoot outside‑plant inter‑building fiber‑optic cables or equivalent and oversee contractors. Troubleshoot complaints. Certify data wiring and monitor, inspect, and conduct all required tests to ensure system component connections are operating properly. Qualifications Considerable knowledge of cabling infrastructure and electronic components required for networking. Knowledge of fire stoppage regulations, EIA/TIA codes, BICSI standards, and related requirements. Ability to install structured cabling components that meet system needs. Ability to read construction drawings, schematic diagrams, and system‑defined infrastructure standards. Ability to maintain complete and accurate records. Minimum Training and Experience High school diploma or GED supplemented by either an associate’s degree in a related field or vocational training in an applicable field, or 3 to 5 years of experience which includes required skills, knowledge and abilities. Physical Requirements Operate a variety of equipment and tools including diagnostic and testing equipment, hand tools and power tools. Lift objects up to 75 lbs and exert force of up to 100 lbs occasionally. Maintain minimum levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Climb and work on tall ladders up to 100 ft in air. Use lifts up to 250 ft in air. Work in confined spaces. Work outdoors in hot and very cold conditions, including inside commercial/industrial freezers with subzero temperatures. Stand and walk for up to 8 hours. Other Skills Basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages). Read a variety of correspondences, manuals, instructions, journals. Prepare and complete forms, reports, and documentation; apply grammar, punctuation, dictation, and style. Communicate verbally and in writing. Manage stress and interpersonal communication. Discriminate colors and shades. Dress in a business‑like manner. Possess basic hand tools for installation of data cabling systems and fiber‑optic hand tools. Travel Requirements Travel outside the U.S. for periods of 1–2 weeks or 1–2 months. Citizenship Requirements U.S. Citizens: possess a U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, valid Social Security card, and valid driver license (Florida or another state). Resident Alien, Non‑U.S. Citizens: possess a valid passport, green card or other ID indicating legal status to work in the United States, valid Social Security card, and valid driver license (Florida or another state). International Applicants: possess an active passport and appropriate green card for work purposes. Additional Requirements Pass a 7‑year background check through local Port Authorities. Obtain TWIC card (non‑paid by the company). Obtain applicable Port badge. Be financially self‑sufficient for discretionary and incidental expenses. Have a credit card and U.S. bank account. Possess a laptop and be computer literate. Maintain a cell phone for contact while traveling. Speak, read, and write English. Military personnel preferred.
