FTE: 0.9 Full‑time Night shift (12‑hour) – Position code R2656852; Onsite – Emergency Services Adult – Location: Palo Alto, 500 Pasteur Dr, California. Overview The Clinical Nurse (RN) provides hands‑on care in the Adult Emergency Department, a Level 1 Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center. Within the Scope of Practice of the California Nursing Practice Act, regulatory requirements, and hospital policies, the Clinical Nurse performs the full nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The nurse collaborates with patients, families, and multidisciplinary team members to deliver family‑centered, evidence‑based care. The department is a three‑time Lantern Award‑winning unit, containing 66 patient beds and an 11‑bed Clinical Decision Unit, and serves over 250 patients daily. The Clinical Nurse contributes to continuous professional development and participates in leadership activities such as shared governance, publication, and teaching. Responsibilities Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families, maintaining a healing climate, providing emotional support, guiding them through illness, recovery, or end‑of‑life processes, and mobilizing patient strengths and self‑care participation. Obtain and interpret assessment data, determine nursing diagnoses, and monitor patient status, adjusting the frequency of observations as clinical stability changes. Collaborate to develop individualized care plans, implement nursing and medical interventions safely, and evaluate outcomes while monitoring for adverse reactions. Assess patients’ and families’ learning needs, teach self‑care and illness prevention, and adjust education based on cultural, developmental, and physiological factors; also provide informal and formal instruction to staff as preceptor or super‑user. Respond rapidly to changing situations, activate emergency protocols, and manage critical events efficiently. Monitor own practice and support colleagues in maintaining patient and employee safety, ensuring compliance with standards and policies, and seeking continual improvement opportunities. Prioritize and delegate tasks, integrating multiple requests while maintaining workflow and seeking assistance as needed. Contribute to team building, positive morale, and conflict resolution through participation in unit programs, meetings, and shared governance activities. Utilize technology for communication, documentation, and locating information related to unusual clinical situations, diagnoses, and treatments. Maintain knowledge and competence reflecting current nursing practice, demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning. Communicate effectively across all formats and settings in clinical practice. Demonstrate leadership within the professional practice setting and in the broader nursing profession. Evaluate personal nursing practice against professional standards, guidelines, and relevant regulations. Education & Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university (preferred). Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Effective communication in English. Minimum of 1 year of Emergency Department experience (2 years preferred). Prefer experience in a Level 1 Trauma Emergency Department. Licenses & Certifications California Registered Nurse (RN) license. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (required for certain cost centers). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association. Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification or completion within 6 months of hire. Emergency Nurse Certification (ENC) preferred. Physical Demands The role requires moderate exertion, including frequent lifting of patients and equipment, bending and stooping, and walking. The environment may involve exposure to contagious disease, radiation, infection, and emotionally disturbed patients; routine safety precautions and protective gear may be required. Blood‑Born Pathogens Category I – Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. Compensation Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $96.35 – $111.14 per hour.
