Infant Teacher - Fulltime

Position Summary We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Infant Teacher – Fulltime. Under the supervision of the Education Director of the Center, the Toddler Teachers shall be responsible for working within the framework of Sunset Park Health Council, DOE, DOHMH, NAEYC, and Quality Stars NY standards, policies and procedures. Teachers promote early childhood education for children and families both in and out of the classroom by providing sound supervision, developmentally appropriate lessons and community outings, and ensuring the health and safety of all children. Teachers develop positive parent relations, encourage parental involvement, and the professional growth of classroom associates. They conduct regular team meetings, attend staff meetings, and seek out professional development opportunities to meet the needs of their classrooms. They must document lessons, observations, assessments, and all necessary paperwork. Job Responsibilities General Work Habits Arrives on time Reliable in attendance Responsible in job duties Good grooming and appropriate attire Alert in health and safety matters Follows center philosophy and policies Opens to new ideas Flexible with assignments and schedule Comes to work with a positive attitude Looks for ways to improve the program Gives ample notice for absences Remains calm in a tense situation Quickly and effectively deals with unexpected situations and problems Ensures all required paperwork is done and/or due on time Careful to keep information about children and families confidential Attends and actively participates in staff meetings Health and Safety Inspects children for signs of illness or injury upon arrival Inspects outdoor and indoor play areas prior to play Follows hand washing procedures accordingly Follows the when to wash hands policies as posted in the classroom Follows diaper changing/potty procedures for children accordingly and as needed Uses the germ box effectively Uses bleach solutions to clean toys and surfaces as required Notifies parents and director when children are sick or get hurt Files incident or accident reports accordingly and as needed Inspects fire exits and extinguishers regularly Feeds children according to their individual needs, family input, and CACFP guidelines Puts infants to sleep according to their individual schedules and takes care of infants upon awakening; every effort to prevent SIDS is made Skills with Children Always attends to children’s needs before everything else Supervises children closely and effectively throughout the day Uses a modulated, appropriate voice Knows and shows respect for individuals Is aware of developmental levels/changes Encourages independence/self‑help Promotes self‑esteem in communications Ability to work with children who are acting out Avoids stereotyping and labeling Reinforces positive behavior Has a clear and fair discipline procedure Ability to set appropriate limits Ability to make appropriate written documentation and referrals when needed Helps develop language by responding to sounds infants make or words children say; sings, talks throughout the day and interacts verbally during routines such as diaper changing, hand washing, etc. Does not speak about the child in front of him/her Skills with Parents Greets parents and children in a positive manner as they enter the classroom Available and approachable with parents Listens and responds well to parents Is tactful with negative information Maintains confidentiality Makes every effort toward positive parent relationships Takes an active role in encouraging parent participation Holds parent conferences on schedule Planning and Skills with Classes/Group Creates an inviting learning environment Turns in lesson plans and children’s observations in a timely fashion Lesson plans support all areas of development and reflect children’s interests Plans are carried out in the classroom Provides developmentally appropriate activities Develops plans based on goals from observations/curriculum Provides suitable materials for all activities Provides plenty of child‑directed activities throughout the day Provides an appropriate role model Anticipates problems and redirects Is flexible, responsive to child interests Is prepared for day’s activities Follows the daily schedule and provides outdoor playtime for children twice a day when weather permitting Handles transitions well Skills with Co‑Worker Is friendly and respectful with others Strives to assume a fair share of work Offers, shares ideas and materials Communicates directly, avoids gossip Approaches criticism with learning attitude Is willing to help others and steps outside normal job perimeters when necessary Supervision Seeks and asks for help if needed Communicates directly with supervisor Stays open to constructive criticism and suggestions Ability to implement suggestions Readily accepts and responds to supervisory inputs accordingly Attitude and Effort Toward Professional Development Takes job seriously, seeks skill improvement Participates in workshops, classes, groups Sets goals for self in professional development Minimum Qualifications 90 credits and more with a study plan working toward a BS in Early Childhood Education, Education, or related field Two years of relevant experience Health and safety trainings Warm, caring and outgoing personality Ability to work well with others Able to create and maintain positive relationships with children, parents and staff Preferred Qualifications BS in Early Childhood Education, Education, or related field and working toward NYS Teacher Certifications Bilingual Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
