About Us

Blue Ocean Mariculture was founded in 2009 to pursue the sustainable farming of local Hawaiian marine finfish. We are proud to be the only open ocean mariculture farm in the United States. With first-hand experience in commercial capture fisheries and understand that some farming of the oceans is necessary and inevitable.

 

We are the exclusive producer of Seriola rivoliana, better known by the market name Hawaiian Kanpachi, a premium sashimi-grade fish coveted by chefs at top sushi and fine dining restaurants everywhere. Hawaiian Kanpachi is raised in the clear, clean waters off Kona, Hawaii, using the most environmentally sustainable aquaculture farming methods.

About the Role

The Marine Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing company vessels, marine engines, and associated mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and support systems. This position performs preventive maintenance and corrective repairs to keep vessels safe, reliable, and available for operations.

 

The Marine Mechanic is expected to identify mechanical issues before they result in equipment failure, diagnose problems systematically, complete repairs to an appropriate marine standard, and maintain accurate maintenance and repair records. The position works closely with vessel operators and operations personnel to coordinate maintenance while minimizing operational downtime.

 

What We'll Ask of You

  • Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair marine engines, propulsion systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, pumps, plumbing, generators, winches, and related vessel equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, routine service, and scheduled repairs in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and company maintenance schedules.
  • Troubleshoot diesel and gasoline engines, electrical systems, steering, fuel, cooling, lubrication, charging, exhaust, and other vessel systems.
  • Repair, rebuild, replace, and install mechanical and electrical components, and test repaired equipment before returning it to service.
  • Identify wear, corrosion, leaks, vibration, overheating, and other developing mechanical issues and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Support vessel haul-outs, re-powers, major repairs, equipment installations, and urgent vessel breakdowns.
  • Maintain tools, diagnostic equipment, parts, supplies, and work areas in clean and serviceable condition.
  • Identify required parts and materials and provide accurate information for procurement.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records, including inspections, parts used, equipment hours, and outstanding maintenance needs.
  • Communicate equipment condition, repair status, safety concerns, and anticipated maintenance needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Follow company safety and environmental procedures for maintenance activities and the handling and disposal of fuels, oils, batteries, chemicals, and waste.
  • Assist with general vessel maintenance and other mechanical projects as operational needs require.

What You'll Bring

Minimum Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrated experience maintaining and repairing marine engines, vessels, vehicles, heavy equipment, or comparable mechanical systems.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to independently diagnose and repair equipment problems.
  • Working knowledge of gasoline and/or diesel engines and related fuel, cooling, lubrication, electrical, and exhaust systems.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, meters, diagnostic equipment, and other repair equipment.

 

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, service procedures, wiring diagrams, and parts information.
  • Ability to identify mechanical issues, determine corrective action, and complete repairs safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records and clearly communicate equipment condition and repair needs.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with operations and maintenance personnel.

Preferred Qualities & Skills

  • Experience maintaining and repairing marine, automotive, heavy, or comparable mechanical equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and repair equipment problems independently.
  • Working knowledge of gasoline and/or diesel engines and related mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Ability to safely use tools, diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to complete repairs safely and efficiently, maintain accurate records, communicate equipment needs, and work independently or as part of a team.

Physical Demands & Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and work in confined or restricted spaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and position tools, parts, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work aboard vessels, on docks, ladders, and uneven or slippery surfaces.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools requiring manual dexterity, grip strength, and repetitive hand and arm movements.
  • Ability to work in outdoor marine conditions, including heat, sun, rain, wind, noise, vibration, and exposure to fuels, oils, exhaust, and other maintenance materials.
  • Ability to safely perform physically demanding maintenance and repair work throughout the workday.
