Executive Director

The Executive Director manages the organization’s day-to-day operations, plays a key role in event planning for RESDC members, and reports to the Board of Directors through the President. The Executive Director serves as a visible spokesperson for RESDC, effectively articulating the organization's positions on retirement and other relevant issues. The Executive Director represents the organization to the media to increase public awareness and broaden the organization's reputation with key community organizations. RESDC’s activities are supported by member dues and sponsorships with partner organizations. The Executive Director shall be a leader and manager adept at balancing internal management with external impact. The successful candidate must be an outstanding communicator who is able to work effectively to fulfill the mission and objectives of RESDC. Primary Responsibilities: Leadership and Legislative Representation Represent RESDC with relevant organizations and public agencies, including the Board of Retirement, San Diego County Employees Retirement Association (SDCERA) Management, the County Board of Supervisors, and pertinent County, state and federal elected and administrative officials. Identify, evaluate, and report on proposed local, state, and federal retirement regulations, legislation, and ballot propositions of interest to RESDC. Attend and monitor all Board of Retirement and pertinent County Board of Supervisors meetings, make statements on behalf of RESDC when appropriate and regularly report their discussions and actions to RESDC leadership. Work in partnership with the RESDC Board and office staff to carry out policies and activities approved by the Board of Directors. Communications and Marketing Design and maintain an effective RESDC member and public information program. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with print and electronic media sources to further RESDC’s mission of retiree advocacy. Design and maintain an effective membership recruitment program. Member Services Assist the President and Board of Directors in planning, arranging and conducting regular and special RESDC business and social events, including scheduled membership meetings and special informational meetings to maximize RESDC membership. General Management, Finance, and Program Management Ensure that day-to-day operations are professionally and efficiently organized and administered. Ensure that RESDC’s monthly newsletter, The Network, continues to exceed reader expectations. Anticipate and act to address organization’s needs in a manner consistent with sound management practices. Use technology to facilitate greater efficiency in organizational management, communications, advocacy, and programs. Work with the Board President, Treasurer, and other Board members as required to develop the annual RESDC budget and long-range budget plans. Ensure that sound financial practices and controls are in place, and that monthly financial reports are presented to the Board of Director. Board of Directors Relations Cultivate a strong and transparent partnership with the Board of Directors in setting policies and positions consistent with the mission and vision of the organization. Participate in Board of Directors meetings and brief the Board on the status of the Association and activities of the staff. Support effective board operations and engage the board in meaningful and appropriate participation that furthers the organization's vision, mission, and goals. Provide support for Board of Directors and committees by working with the President, officers, and committee chairs to arrange meeting dates and locations; develop meeting agendas; and ensure that meeting minutes are recorded, prepared, approved and securely stored. Qualifications: Knowledge and Abilities Strategic thinking, analytical, and planning abilities; Excellent internal and external communication skills, including public speaking, presentation and writing skills; Knowledge about and experience with retirement systems and retiree issues highly desirable; General knowledge of technology and information management systems. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in government relations, advocacy or related field; Three to five years of progressive experience in leading teams or supervising personnel; Three to five years of progressive experience in the management of non-profit, governmental relations, public relations/public information, communications or related field highly desirable. Compensation and benefits: Salary range of $80,000 - $100,000 per year commensurate with background and experience.
