Vehicle Equipment Technician

Job Information

Non-exempt (compensatory and/or overtime eligible); full-time; 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m.; full-benefits. Note: During emergency situations, inclement weather or during the summer months, hours of operation may be changed to accommodate the work performed by other County departments. Employees must be available to accommodate these alternative working hours.

This position performs routine and skilled maintenance, troubleshooting, mechanical diagnoses, and repairs on a wide range of municipal fleet equipment, including gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles; specialized accessories; various-sized buses; and conducts DOT inspections and scheduled maintenance while providing direction to support staff as needed. Note: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy. For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate.

Essential Duties And Job Responsibilities

• Perform preventative and routine maintenance services on fleet vehicles and equipment to support safe and reliable operation
• Diagnose and troubleshoot drivability, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and operating system issues using computerized diagnostic equipment
• Follow up on repairs identified through maintenance activities, inspections, repair requests, and drivability concerns to ensure issues are fully resolved
• Perform road tests and operational tests on vehicles and equipment to verify performance and confirm repair effectiveness
• Respond to driver complaints and perform on-road and off-site service calls to diagnose and repair equipment in the field
• Install and repair electronic accessories and vehicle electrical components to support operational needs
• Fabricate, install, mount, and weld components to support equipment repair, modification, and accessory installation
• Inspect, repair, and replace tires, tubes, and vehicle components and perform minor and major tune-ups as required
• Perform annual DOT inspections on applicable vehicles and complete necessary repairs to maintain regulatory compliance
• Repair and recharge air conditioning systems and operate coolant recycling equipment to maintain climate control functionality
• Maintain, install, and remove seasonal equipment and accessories to support operational readiness throughout the year
• Change oil and filters, lubricate vehicles and equipment, and complete related preventative maintenance tasks
• Utilize computerized systems to track work orders, document repairs, and maintain accurate service and maintenance records
• Check vehicles in the fleet area for lights on, flat tires, fluid leaks, and other irregularities requiring attention
• Perform housekeeping in work areas to maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment
• Perform data entry and email communication to support workflow coordination and documentation requirements
• Assist with other Fleet Services operations as needed to support overall shop and fleet functions
• Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications And Requirements

The qualifications/requirements, knowledge/skills/abilities and physical requirements or working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum of 3 years of work experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair
• Possession of refrigerant certifications issued by Environmental Protection Agency to comply with the Clean Air Act, Sections 608 and 609
• Possession of a valid driver's license

A successful incumbent operating in this role displays the following:

• Ability to obtain valid Maryland class B commercial driver's license with airbrake and passenger endorsements (or an equivalent license) within 6 months after hire
• Knowledge of potential hazards associated with this work and appropriate safety precautions
• Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials and parts used in vehicle repair
• Knowledge of automotive and diesel systems
• Knowledge of DOT inspection standards
• Knowledge of hydraulic systems
• Knowledge of welding, fabrication, and metal-working techniques
• Skilled in performing preventative and routine maintenance
• Skilled in diagnosing mechanical issues
• Skilled in installing and repairing electrical accessories
• Skilled in performing field repairs
• Skilled in vehicle equipment repair
• Ability to effectively use and maintain computerized and electronic diagnostic and service systems (e.g. electronic system analyzer, wheel alignment system, coolant recycling system, etc.)
• Ability to effectively detect and diagnose automotive and equipment defects
• Ability to write and maintain clear, concise records; accurate math skills
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public
• Effective spoken and written (English) communication skills

• Technical school training
• Experience using computerized vehicle diagnostic systems
• Bus maintenance/repair work experience

Physical requirements / working conditions:

• While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly walk; and frequently lift between 20-50 pounds, perform repetitive motions and drive;
• While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors and near machinery

Additional Information / Examination Process

• Employees in this classification are designated as essential. An essential employee means the employee is considered necessary for the operation of County services. Essential employees are required to report to work in the event of a weather incident, general emergency, or disasters when County offices are closed. They may be required to work overtime with little or no advance notice and may be required to report to work in emergency situations and/or after hours.

• Safety boots will be provided
• Available for varied work hours as needed to accommodate department changes and priorities, and on-call for emergency situations
