Total Compensation Estimator Tool Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) Athletic Trainer BOT (Board of Trustees) Position Number 48008707 Department: Athletics Who are we? FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf or hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more. How you will make an impact The Athletic Trainer is responsible for the development, implementation, and daily management of a comprehensive athletic training program that promotes the health, safety, and performance of student-athletes. This position provides preventative care, injury evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and education while ensuring compliance with all applicable state regulations, professional standards, and school policies.
- Athletic Training Program Management, Injury Care, Event Coverage, Coaching Support & Equipment Oversight. Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive athletic training program for all high school athletics. Ensure the athletic training/healthcare facility is clean, organized, safe, and operating efficiently. Provide injury prevention, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning services for student-athletes and visiting teams. Deliver first aid and immediate care during practices, competitions, and tournaments. Provide athletic training coverage for designated home athletic events and practices throughout fall, winter, and spring seasons, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as assigned. Collaborate with coaching staff to develop and implement sport-specific conditioning, strengthening, and injury-prevention programs. Assist with the proper selection, fitting, and use of protective and medical equipment. Maintain inventory and oversee the care, organization, and replenishment of athletic training supplies and equipment. Assist with ordering, budgeting, and ensuring availability of necessary materials to support daily operations and emergency care.
- Medical Management, Documentation & Communication. Coordinate annual athletic physicals and manage medical eligibility and clearance processes. Oversee return-to-play decisions for injured student-athletes in accordance with established protocols and medical guidance. Maintain accurate, secure, and confidential health records in compliance with FHSAA regulations, FSDB requirements, and applicable laws. Communicate consistently and professionally with physicians, parents/guardians, coaches, the Athletic Director, and the Executive Director of Physical Education and Health regarding injury status, treatment plans, rehabilitation progress, and return-to-play recommendations. Document all injuries, treatments, and rehabilitation services using designated systems. Maintain daily treatment logs, incident reports, and provide injury data summaries as requested.
- Emergency Preparedness & Environmental Safety. Promote a safe athletic environment by monitoring environmental conditions such as heat, weather, and field safety. Develop, review, and implement venue-specific Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) and provide training to coaching and athletic staff on emergency procedures.
- Student Education, Professional Development & Compliance. Provide educational opportunities and mentorship for students interested in health sciences or athletic training careers. Deliver training and informational sessions for coaches, staff, and student-contact personnel on injury prevention, wellness, emergency care, and safe participation in athletic activities. Remain current with professional literature, research, and best practices in athletic training. Provide services under the direction of a supervising physician and ensure compliance with State of Florida athletic training laws, professional standards, and school policies. Collaborate with healthcare providers, coaches, and staff to support student-athlete care and performance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal, Executive Director of Physical Education and Health, or Athletic Director to support the overall athletic program and school operations.
- Knowledge of the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of sports-related injuries consistent with the professional scope of a Certified Athletic Trainer.
- Knowledge of injury-prevention strategies, conditioning principles, return-to-play criteria, and general wellness practices for student-athletes.
- Knowledge and skilled application of therapeutic and rehabilitative modalities, including but not limited to cryotherapy, thermotherapy, mechanical stimulation, massage, light, sound, electricity, water, air, therapeutic exercise, reconditioning, and fitness programs.
- Strong skills in assessing, managing, treating, rehabilitating, and reconditioning student-athletes and evaluating athlete readiness for participation.
- Skill in developing, implementing, and monitoring sport-specific conditioning, strengthening, injury-prevention, and general wellness programs.
- Skill in the proper selection, fitting, evaluation, and use of sport and rehabilitative equipment.
- Strong oral, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with coaches, athletic administrators, healthcare providers, supervising physicians, parents, and other stakeholders.
- Skill in maintaining accurate, detailed, and confidential medical and treatment records; generating reports; and using FSDB-designated documentation systems.
- Strong proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software to support recordkeeping, reporting, education, and program management.
- Ability to work effectively in high-stress situations, including emergency care scenarios and time-sensitive injury management.
- Ability and willingness to travel with athletic teams to away contests, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
- Ability to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License and meet FSDB requirements to operate a school or state vehicle in accordance with Transportation Policy.
- Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24.
- Ability to pass training and administer skills acquired during CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI).
- Bachelor's degree, (Master's preferred) from an accredited athletic training education program or health related field. Three (3) years of athletic training experience. Must hold current BOC certification and be credentialed as an ATC/LAT (or eligible for Florida licensure).
Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills. Hiring Salary Range 11 month position: $46,145.60 - $53,645.60 annually. (paid biweekly over 26-pays) This range is inclusive of verified experience and education. *Base $46,145.60 Bachelor's Degree (required) $3,000.00 Master's degree addl $1,500.00 Additional Related and verified Full-time Experience (20-year max) addl $150.00 per year Hours 40 Hours per a week. Hours may vary significantly due to practices, games, events, tournaments, and travel, typically ranging from 4 to 10 hours per day. Must be available for evening and weekend events. Sample Schedule: Depending on season and schedule of events With Students: • Sunday evenings: 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM • Monday through Thursday (afternoons/evenings): 1:30 PM - 10:00 PM • Friday: 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM Without Students: • Monday through Friday (mornings/afternoons): 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM Vision FSDB will prepare each student for a lifetime of success.
