Microbiology Clinical Laboratory Supervisor, Evening

Summary Under the general direction of the Laboratory Managers and Medical Director, the individual is responsible for staff orientation, training, competency assessment, and daily supervision of work activities of personnel. Does this position require patient care? No Essential Functions Provides daily supervision of technical, clerical, and service employees. Plans, organizes, delineates, and schedules duties and responsibilities of laboratory staff in conjunction with the Laboratory Managers. Assists other technologists as needed with technical problems and interpretation of results. Determines the priority of work at the laboratory, assuring the timely completion of work. Is responsible for ordering and maintaining an appropriate level of inventory and laboratory supplies. Maintains manuals on all Standard Operating Procedures and required records and reports. Responsible for ensuring staff adhere to all safety policies and procedures. Responsible for orientation, training, and competency assessments, assuring staff follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples. Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed. Follows the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either corrects them or immediately notifies the general supervisor, technical consultant, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. Education Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology required OR Bachelor’s Degree in Laboratory Sciences required. Other certificates/diplomas in Clinical Laboratory Sciences required. Licenses and Credentials Medical Technologist (ASCP) [MLT, MT, MLA, Histologists] - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) required. Experience Lab experience 3-5 years required. Supervisory experience 1-2 years preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The knowledge, both practical and theoretical, of tests and procedures necessary to review findings and advise and direct subordinates in action. Demonstrates advanced level of analytical skills and judgment. Must have a relatively high level of analytical ability to work with complex instrumentation, resolve technical equipment problems, relate test results to normal and pathological states, and interpret quality control data. Must have an understanding of computer technology and its application to analytical procedures and quality control. Must have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance and repair, and analytic techniques. Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations and act appropriately. Detailed knowledge of applicable federal, state and accreditation requirements. Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Advanced computer skills. Comprehensive understanding of test principles, equipment operation and computer system operations. Make appropriate decisions, develop and complete follow-up actions in conjunction with lab leadership. Must be able to perform as a senior team member, providing direction and guidance to less experienced technologists. Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols, including communication to lab leadership when issues are identified. Must be able to perform as a team member. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff, including physicians, hospital personnel, employees, and patients.
