Job Overview The Michigan Department of Corrections is a Michigan Veteran's Affairs Agency (MVAA) Gold Level Veteran Friendly Employer, employing nearly 1,500 veterans and active military members. Responsibilities Maintain prisoner health records in accordance with federal and state statutes and departmental policies and procedures. Assist with documenting diagnosis codes on prisoner records. Maintain health care databases. Perform continuous quality improvement activities and reports. Coordinate the distribution of health record information. Process release of information requests. Prepare hard‑copy health records for transfer and receive hard‑copy records. Train new health‑care employees on the Electronic Medical Record system. Coordinate and track specialty health‑care appointments. Work within the secure perimeter of correctional facilities. Education Possession of an associate’s degree in health information or medical record technology. Experience Medical Record Examiner 8: No specific type or amount of experience is required. Medical Record Examiner 9: One year of experience equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner 8. Medical Record Examiner E10: Two years of experience equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner, including one year equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner 9. Certification Certified by the American Health Information Management Association as a Registered Health Information Technician or a Registered Health Information Administrator. Employment Restrictions Individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who have felony charges pending are ineligible for employment, in accordance with Public Act 140 of 1996. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation, in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Ethical Standards Employment in the state requires a high degree of loyalty and ethical standards. All employees must meet these standards and report any possible conflict of interest. Training New hires and returning employees who have been away from the department for more than two years will complete Non‑Custody New Employee Training (NCNET), either 40 or 80 hours of initial in‑person training based on level of offender contact and job classification.
