The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Specialist, Health Promotions . Working as a member of the Health Promotions and Education department, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy. The Health Promotions Specialist coordinates, implements, and evaluates lung health programs across Illinois, with a focus on supporting the Asthma in Schools Initiative and other assigned projects. This grant‑funded position supports statewide efforts to work with school and early childhood learning locations to create and implement policies and practices that reduce the burden of childhood asthma and reduce exposure to environmental contaminants at school. This position will engage school partners and other stakeholders to provide training, education, resources, support, and technical assistance. This position is based at the American Lung Association’s Chicago, Springfield, IL or St. Louis, MO office and is a hybrid role combining in‑person and virtual work. This position is grant‑funded. Location Chicago, Illinois Springfield, IL St. Louis, Missouri Hybrid: The position is located at either the American Lung Association’s St. Louis, MO office, Chicago, IL office, or Springfield, IL office and will be a hybrid of in‑person and virtual work. Responsibilities Work with the Project Manager to develop, implement, and evaluate the Lung Friendly Schools project in Illinois focused on implementing school‑based policies and practices that protect lung health and reduce the burden of asthma in schools across Illinois. Build, maintain, and cultivate relationships with funders, partners, school personnel, and other stakeholders to advance program delivery, sustainability, and growth across Illinois. Support project outreach, education, promotion, reporting, and other activities as assigned. Implement best practice programs to protect lung health and reduce the burden of asthma in schools. Support program improvement by tracking and reporting on program participation and outcomes as assigned. Coordinate all aspects of the statewide Lung Friendly Schools Workgroup including, but not limited to, member recruitment and retention, meeting planning, workgroup support and facilitation, and provide excellent customer service. Coordinate assigned aspects of grant project activities such as trainings, presentations, partner recruitment, resource distribution, and serve as the lead for select activities. Develop and effectively use timelines and work plans to ensure completion of program deliverables. Represent the American Lung Association as a member of community, civic, and/or health coalitions and organizations related to the Association’s mission. Participate in and support area events and provide support for annual report, awards, grants and other activities as assigned. Participate on regional and national American Lung Association program workgroups and committees as requested. Complete other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in public health or related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Minimum 2 years of experience developing and implementing community awareness, education, and programs specifically related to areas of public health, community engagement, or public policy. Prior experience in public health, community relations, public policy, and/or advocacy. Must be a self‑starter with excellent communication skills both written and oral. Positive attitude with the ability to work independently and in a team environment. Required to travel periodically for meetings and conferences. Ability to lift approximately 25 lbs. Able to work with minimum direct supervision, make decisions, and take initiative. Proven ability to cultivate and steward relationships across a diverse population. Must have a valid Driver’s license and your own reliable transportation with the ability to travel within assigned area for meetings and conferences, as well as the flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends with some overnights required. Required to travel statewide to provide training and technical assistance and to attend meetings and conferences as required by assigned grants. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office. Consistent with its mission, the American Lung Association maintains a smoke‑free workplace; all employees must abstain from tobacco use in any form, including vaping. Compensation Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. The target hiring range for this position is between $46,000 and $56,000 per annum. Benefits Paid Leave: 10 vacation days in the first year (15 days thereafter), 2 personal days and 15 sick days per year, as well as 12 company‑paid holidays per year. We also offer Paid Parental Leave for eligible employees. Insurance: Employees (and their eligible dependents) can enroll in our medical, dental, and vision plans, as well as voluntary plans for critical illness, accident, hospital indemnity and short‑term disability and supplemental life/AD&D insurance. Employees will be enrolled in company‑paid life/AD&D and long‑term disability Insurance coverage. Retirement Plan: Eligible employees can participate in our 401(k) Defined Contribution Retirement Plan, which offers matching employer contributions (up to 4%) and year‑end discretionary non‑elective contributions.
