Respiratory Therapist – Adult Critical Care (Part Time/Full Time) – Sign on Bonus Eligible At Tufts Medical Center, Respiratory Therapists play a central role in patient care. This position focuses on the assessment and treatment of patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction, including both adult and neonatal populations. Department‑Specific Requirements & Scheduling Licensed in Massachusetts and RRT status with NBRC (new graduates may begin as CRT; RRT must be achieved within 3–6 months). Flexible self‑scheduling every 6 weeks; no on‑call. Holiday balance: one major plus one minor winter holiday, and one major summer holiday. Rotating day/night shifts (only 2–4 nights per 6‑week schedule); full‑time nights available. Weekend rotation begins every other weekend, with option to shift to every third weekend. Job Overview This role is responsible for respiratory care for patients of all age groups diagnosed with cardiopulmonary dysfunction. Responsibilities include setting up equipment, administering gases, managing mechanical ventilation, performing diagnostic procedures, and collaborating with the medical team to ensure quality care. Minimum Qualifications Associate’s degree from an accredited Respiratory Care program. Licensed by the state of Massachusetts to provide respiratory care. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT); RRT required for employment at TMC. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Respiratory Care program. One (1) year of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Duties and Responsibilities Initiate patients on invasive and non‑invasive mechanical ventilation; routinely check and maintain ventilator function per physician orders. Adhere to infection control guidelines for equipment and adjust ventilator parameters based on clinical assessment and blood gas analysis. Wean patients from mechanical ventilation and other therapies through assessment and protocol adjustment. Administer inhaled medications and oxygen using low‑flow, high‑flow, open, and closed circuits. Provide patient‑ and family‑centered care; explain procedures. Analyze blood specimens for blood gases, glucose, and electrolytes in neonatal and pediatric ICUs. Apply positive‑pressure breathing therapies (e.g., CPAP, BiPAP). Assist in the transport of life‑support patients to/from referral hospitals; provide in‑house transport of mechanically ventilated and high‑risk patients. Administer non‑traditional therapies such as Nitric Oxide gas as ordered. Support resuscitation and high‑risk delivery interventions. Monitor therapy effectiveness using pulse oximetry, end‑tidal CO₂, and transcutaneous PO₂/PCO₂, plus invasive techniques such as arterial blood gas sampling. Use oxygen analyzers, calibrate monitors, and maintain transcutaneous oxygen monitors and end‑tidal CO₂ monitors. Assist in cardiopulmonary resuscitation as part of the code team, providing airway management and manual resuscitation. Document therapy, patient assessment, interventions, and test results in progress notes. Transcribe detailed shift notes for all patients cared for during the shift. Ensure proper assembly of all respiratory therapy equipment. Perform daily rounds and participate actively in patient care discussions. Assist with development of in‑service programs for departmental personnel. Assist the Associate Director with orientation of new employees; act as preceptor for new staff and clinical instructor for university students. Physical Requirements Walk and stand for approximately 90% of the time. Transport respiratory therapy equipment (up to 100 lbs.) using carts or wheels. Communicate with and assess patients of all age populations. Use fine hand manipulation to operate computers or respiratory equipment. See computer screens and reports. Skills & Abilities Knowledge of medical terminology, cardiopulmonary physiology, and respiratory science. Effective communication with professional staff and patients. Assess patient status and develop treatment plans. Perform duties under emergency and stressful situations. Compensation & Benefits Base pay range: $43.00 – $47.41 per hour.
