Are you ready for a unique opportunity to use your carpentry background to help further research on the built environment? The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is searching for a new Carpenter to serve a crucial role on our Operations Team. Our Operations Team builds the houses and other specimens for Researchers to test and analyze what’s possible in the resiliency space. Your knowledge of installation, blueprints, and advance construction projects will help the team present a finished product on time and error free. If you enjoy carpentry work that is less than routine and captures the best a team can produce, this position may excite you!

After one year, you will know you are successful if: 

• As someone with a mechanical aptitude, you enjoy jumping in to assist the team outside of your main area of focus. This would include operating forklift equipment, performing residential house carpentry tasks (framing, roofing, drywalling, painting, etc.), and facility support activities. 

• You’ve overcome obstacles, sought advice from subject matter experts, and had to pivot based on outcomes in a small and large testing laboratory. 

• You’ve been able to keep tools clean, sharp and ready, utilizing a PM strategy so each tool is ready for use when needed.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience working with power and hand tools, like saws, drills, and hammers

• Strong verbal communication skills

• Ability to follow plans, blueprints, and sketches

• Good math and spatial reasoning skills

• Knowledge of carpentry best practices and techniques
