Lead Solar Field Service Technician

Location: Multiple sites, regional travel required (in person), up to 75% travel required

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 – $40.00 per hour, based on experience

Position Summary

The Lead Solar Field Service Technician – is the field authority for commissioning, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing commercial and industrial solar. You will lead crews, work independently on live-system failures, and keep assets safe, reliable, and producing. This is a senior role for an experienced solar technician who does not need step-by-step direction and is looking to advance in their career.

Objectives

• Lead field crews and mentor junior technicians

• Perform commissioning, preventative and corrective maintenance on c & i systems

• Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, controls and communication issues

• Validate installation quality against drawings, single-line diagrams and OEM documentation

• Produce commissioning reports, punch lists and corrective action documentation

• Work directly with clients, utilities, EPCs, OEMs and engineers

• Support warehouse and operations teams with equipment readiness and feedback

Competencies

Core Electrical

• Strong electrical troubleshooting and repair skills (inverters, AC/DC systems, DAS systems)

• Safe AC/DC testing with multimeters, clamp meters and Megger insulation testers, set up and use IV curve tracers, IR scans and the ability to interpret the data, not just collect it

• Work on low- and medium-voltage systems, including transformers and switchgear

• Configure and troubleshoot DAS/SCADA and communications: Ethernet, fiber, cellular gateways, RS-485, Modbus TCP/RTU

• Read and interpret electrical schematics, single-line and three-line diagrams

Solar Technical Skills

• Experience with solar O&M / maintenance. Troubleshoot and repair solar systems: strings, combiner/junction boxes, and string, central and micro inverters

• Diagnose ground faults, arc faults, insulation resistance failures, polarity errors, current/voltage mismatch and string underperformance

• I-V curve tracing and root-cause analysis of performance loss

• Voc/IMP, continuity and string-level testing

• Thermal imaging and interpretation

• Inverter fault codes, firmware upgrades, parameter setup, protection verification, and replacement and recommissioning

BESS Technical Skills (Experience in this area a plus but not required)

• AC- and DC-coupled architectures, battery racks and containerized systems

• Diagnose and service PCS, BMS and EMS, and control and protection interfaces

• Startup readiness, pre-functional inspection, alarm verification, sequence-of-operations and functional control testing

• Battery communications verification and capacity validation support

• Fault isolation and safe shutdown procedures

• Inspect and maintain battery enclosures and HVAC units

Mechanical & Installation

• Install, torque and align racking and enclosure components

• Replace defective inverters, combiner boxes, modules, AC/DC wiring, fuses, contactors and sensors

Safety & Compliance

• Enforce OSHA, NFPA 70E, LOTO, arc-flash and fall protection

• Job hazard analysis, toolbox talks and energized work planning before every job

• NEC Articles 690, 705 and 706; familiarity with NFPA/NEC code with certification support provided as needed.

Documentation

• Log work, photos, serial numbers and site notes in reporting platform.

• Complete QA/QC and safety forms

• Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office 365)

Education & Experience

Required

• 3+ years of hands-on C&I solar field experience

• Proven lead, commissioning or senior service technician background

• Demonstrated success diagnosing and repairing live system failures

• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites

Preferred

• Journeyman or Master Electrician license

• NABCEP Solar (PV) Installation Professional or Solar (PV)Commissioning & Maintenance

• OSHA 10/30 or NFPA 70E training

• OEM experience and certifications: SMA, Sungrow, SolarEdge, CPS, and AlsoEnergy

• Knowledge of utility interconnection and grid-tied systems

• BESS field experience (Experience in this area a plus but not required)

Physical Requirements

• Lift up to 50 lbs. and work in all outdoor conditions

• Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces and around high-voltage equipment

• Stand, bend and climb for extended periods

• Willingness to travel to remote job sites up to 75% of the time
