At the supervisor’s discretion, exemptions may be made for special projects or responsibilities requiring periodic focus time. Position Summary The mentor of high school students position pairs current Oregon Coast Community College students who are alumni of Lincoln County School District high schools with current LCSD high school students. Mentors provide relational support, encouragement, and guidance to help prospective students develop a sense of belonging, academic readiness, and confidence in their transition to college. This position offers meaningful professional development in leadership, communication, and student support practices. Duties and Responsibilities Student Engagement and Relational Support Establish and maintain supportive mentoring relationships with assigned LCSD high school students. Engage students through personal narrative, including accounts of barriers, setbacks, and perseverance encountered during the transition from high school to college. Participate in classroom visits and other outreach activities in the high school. Foster a sense of community, belonging, and mattering among mentored students. Academic Readiness and Resource Navigation Support high school students in understanding academic expectations and developing college readiness skills. Connect high school students with appropriate academic support services, institutional resources, and relevant staff. Referral and Escalation Identify situations requiring intervention beyond the scope of peer mentoring and refer students to appropriate college staff or community resources in a timely manner. Maintain current knowledge of OCCC escalation protocols and the full range of available support services available. Professional Development Participate in training and ongoing development activities focused on mentoring skills, including active listening, effective questioning, empathy, and boundary setting. Demonstrate continuous growth in communication skills and strategies for supporting students from diverse backgrounds. Engage in reciprocal leadership development by both mentoring students and receiving guidance from supervising staff. Compliance and Conduct Adhere to all applicable federal, state, and institutional laws, regulations, and guidelines governing student services and education programs. Complete required FERPA training prior to beginning work and maintain confidentiality in all student interactions. Miscellaneous Participate in training, in‑services and professional development. Support student success through participation in college committee work, Welcome Week, OCCC Cares, Commencement and/or related activities. Perform other duties, as assigned, that support the college’s mission. Supervisory Responsibility This position does not have any supervisory responsibility. Requirements Minimum Qualifications Currently enrolled student at Oregon Coast Community College. Minimum 2.0 cumulative OCCC GPA. Preferred Qualifications Personal experience navigating challenges in the transition from secondary to postsecondary education. Graduate of a Lincoln County High School. Bilingual – Spanish. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and build trust with diverse student populations. Reliability, professionalism, and a commitment to personal and professional growth. Working Environment & Physical Requirements Sit, see and talk or hear. Have mobility to move between offices, classrooms, and floors. Use hands to finger, handle or operate computers, objects, tools or controls. Reach with hands and arms. Occasionally bend, stoop, and pull. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and have the ability to carry equipment and tools of moderate weight, using arms and hands. Have vision and hearing abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus, and complete and maintain various types of records. Hear the conversational voice and effectively communicate responses. Work in an office environment with potential for interruptions and background noise. Assignment will include presence at all primary OCCC locations and may include evening and weekend work. Travel between College sites and other locations will be required. Occasional travel and overnight stays outside of Lincoln County may be required for training and other purposes.
