A Day in the Life:

A Custodian at Northfield Mount Hermon begins each day focused on the cleanliness, safety, and overall condition of campus buildings. Responsibilities include cleaning and disinfecting restrooms and fixtures using approved methods, removing snow from nearby steps and sidewalks with tools such as brooms and shovels, and occasionally assisting with leaf raking. Custodians also supervise work-job students by assigning responsibilities, providing instruction, and ensuring students follow program expectations. The role includes monitoring cleaning supply inventory to support efficient use of materials and ensuring custodial equipment is properly maintained and used in accordance with safety standards. At times, Custodians may take on specialized projects such as floor stripping and waxing, as well as carpet and upholstery cleaning. Reliability, punctuality, and adherence to school safety policies are essential to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students and employees.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Ability to clean and care for assigned areas and equipment
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
• Flexibility to manage a variety of changing responsibilities
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions
• Strong attendance and time management skills
• Valid Driver's License and ability to operate motorized vehicles required
• Ability to maintain the physical condition necessary for standing, walking, bending, or crouching for extended periods; moving up to 40 lbs; and working in environments with possible exposure to fumes or odors

Preferred Qualifications:

• Some custodial experience is desirable
• Previous experience at a school or working with adolescents
