Senior Tooling Design Engineer CAD CAM

Job Post Summary

Family owned manufacturing company with a long operating history is seeking a Senior Tooling Design Engineer with strong plastic injection mold design, CAD CAM, CNC programming, and manufacturing experience.

This position provides senior level technical support for injection mold tooling from initial design and engineering through manufacturing and modification. The engineer will work closely with customers, engineers, product designers, mold builders, machinists, vendors, and internal manufacturing teams to ensure tooling is accurate, manufacturable, efficient, and meets customer requirements.

Job Roles and Responsibilities

• Mold Design and Engineering

• Review and approve plastic injection mold designs for accuracy, manufacturability, molding requirements, customer specifications, and tooling standards

• Develop preliminary and final mold layouts and tooling design concepts

• Create and maintain CAD models, drawings, layouts, schematics, and assembly drawings

• Interpret part prints, engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and customer requirements

• Identify and resolve moldability, tooling, quality, and manufacturability issues

• Support customers, engineers, product designers, and manufacturing teams with technical design solutions

• Quotes, Engineering Changes and Project Coordination

• Review engineering changes and determine tooling feasibility and impact

• Provide technical information required for tooling modifications and quotations

• Coordinate outsourced tooling activities related to schedule, quality, specifications, and tooling standards

• Release approved designs and manufacturing data

• Prepare stock lists and technical information for component purchasing and mold construction

• Support prototype tooling, mold modifications, engineering changes, and special projects

• CAD CAM Programming and CNC Support

• Develop CNC programs and cutter paths using CAD CAM software

• Create machining programs from CAD models, part prints, and engineering requirements

• Verify CNC programs and manufacturing data for accuracy

• Prepare CNC setup documentation including program sheets, tool length checks, work offsets, fixtures, and workholding requirements

• Troubleshoot machining and programming issues

• Develop and manufacture electrodes using CAD geometry and graphite

• Support electrode programming, setup, and machining

• Continuous Improvement and Documentation

• Research tooling, machining, design, and manufacturing methods

• Identify opportunities to improve tooling efficiency, quality, and performance

• Maintain accurate engineering and tooling records

• Document engineering changes, design approvals, tooling communications, and CAD CAM data

• Participate in customer and internal technical meetings

• Work collaboratively with customers, engineers, designers, machinists, vendors, and manufacturing teams

• Maintain confidentiality of customer and company information

Qualifications and Certifications

• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in plastic injection mold design, tooling, CAD CAM, CNC machining, or a related manufacturing environment

• Demonstrated experience designing and manufacturing plastic injection molds

• Demonstrated experience with CAD CAM programming and CNC machining

• Strong knowledge of injection mold design, construction, components, materials, and manufacturing processes

• Strong understanding of injection molding requirements and moldability

• Proficiency with CAD and CAD CAM software

• Working knowledge of CNC programming, cutting tools, fixtures, workholding, and machining setups

• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, part prints, GD&T, and customer specifications

• Strong problem solving and analytical skills

• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines

• Strong communication skills with customers, engineers, designers, machinists, and vendors

• Associate degree or technical degree in Tool and Die, Mold Design, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing Technology, CAD CAM, or related field preferred

• Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
