Assistant Speech Pathologist

Speech Language Pathologist Assistant

Reports to: Director of Special Education

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Date Revised: January 2021

Primary Purpose:

Plan and provide speech-language pathology services to students with speech, voice, or language disorders as prescribed, directed and supervised by ASHA-certified speech language pathologists. Provide therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with their students' ability to derive full benefit from the educational program. Maintain records and documentation as directed by licensed supervisor.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology from an ASHA accredited college or university or
  • Bachelor's degree with appropriate leveling courses.
  • Valid Texas license as a speech-language pathologist assistant granted by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SBESLPA)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of habilitation, and rehabilitation of speech-language disorders and conditions
  • Ability to instruct and manage student behavior
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations as assigned

Experience:

Minimum of 25 hours observation and 25 hours direct clinical service or ability to complete 50-hour requirements within three months of employment.

Additional Information:

This position is funded with external funds (State Allotment and/or Federal). Continuation of this position is contingent upon continued receipt of the external funding. All duties/responsibilities comply with the respective fund source activities and requirements.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Therapy:

  1. Assist with informal documentation as directed by the speech-language pathologist.
  1. Provide data to supervisor regarding student progress.
  1. Follow documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising speech-language pathologist.
  1. Document student performance (i.e., tallying data for the speech-language pathologist to use; preparing charts, records, and graphs) and report this information to the supervising speech-language pathologist.

Consultation:

  1. Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom activities to improve communication skills of students.
  1. Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents regarding the accomplishment of therapy goals and needs of the student.

Student Management:

  1. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
  1. Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  1. Be a positive role model.
  1. Collect data for monitoring quality improvement.

Program Management:

  1. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of speech-language pathology services and make changes based on the findings.
  1. Assist in the selection of equipment and instructional materials.
  1. Assist with clerical duties such as preparing materials and scheduling activities as directed by the supervising speech-language pathologist.
  1. Assist with departmental operations (scheduling, record keeping, safety/maintenance of supplies and equipment)

Administration:

  1. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
  1. Comply with all district and campus routines, regulations and job responsibilities.
  1. Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.

Other:

  1. Report to work on time and absent with a good cause.
  1. Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular districtwide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate lifting and carrying. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.
