Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional. The RN coordinates patient care delivery by the healthcare team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient. The RN identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems. The RN develops and implements an individualized plan of care. The RN evaluates the patient's response to care. The RN promotes safe passage for patients through their healthcare encounters. The RN delegates interventions based on each patient's condition. The RN's role applies to hospital inpatient and outpatient departments with 24/7 staffing. Examples of applicable areas include various procedural units.

Essential Functions of the Role: Using clinical reasoning, the RN conducts accurate clinical assessments. The RN identifies and prioritizes patient and family needs. The RN develops, implements, and evaluates the nursing plan of care. Modifications are made to the plan to meet clinical outcomes. The RN systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice. The RN supports evidence-based practice changes through research utilization. The RN creates a compassionate, supportive, safe, and therapeutic environment. Therapeutic relationships are developed with patients and families. The RN manages emotional and physical pain to promote comfort and healing. The RN recognizes and incorporates unique patient and family differences into care plans. The RN preserves and protects patient confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights. An individualized plan is created that reflects patient and family values. The RN facilitates learning for patients, families, and the healthcare team. The RN works collaboratively with colleagues to implement an integrated plan of care. The RN uses strategies for problem-solving for patients and staff. The RN considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, and efficiency in care delivery. The RN participates in shared governance and decision-making processes. The RN identifies personal goals for ongoing professional growth. The RN contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues.

Key Success Factors: Knowledge of nursing and patient care standards and procedures is essential. Understanding of laws and regulations governing nursing care is necessary. Knowledge of medical terminology and principles of health promotion is required. The RN must possess strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing. Interpersonal skills are necessary for interaction with diverse constituencies. The RN should have critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The ability to observe changes in patient conditions is crucial. The RN must be capable of providing quality, patient-centered care. General computer skills, including knowledge of electronic medical documentation, are needed.
