Thea Foss vessel overview

The 120-foot, 260 GRT Thea Foss is a steel-hulled luxury yacht designed by famed naval architect L.E. (Ted) Geary and built by Craig Shipbuilding Co. in Long Beach, California in 1930. The vessel carries between 5 and 6 crew members and up to 20 day-cruise guests or 10 overnight guests. The owner Saltchuk Resources committed to an extensive restoration over the years, and the vessel is in excellent operational and cosmetic condition. Today, Thea Foss is home-ported in Seattle on Lake Union and is used for the enjoyment of the customers and guests of the Saltchuk family of companies. The boat is operated and maintained year-round. The vessel may travel to Alaska or the San Juan Islands in the summer for a few months and otherwise is based in Seattle on Lake Union for local dinner cruising in the Spring and Fall/Winter, with Jan-April in maintenance.

Job Responsibilities

Duties entail a wide variety of responsibilities, including, but not limited to:

\n
• Operating the Thea Foss’s engines, Twin Atlas 550hp direct reversing diesels
\n
• Hands on maintenance and repair of the vessel’s mechanical systems, and working with qualified outside vendors, including hydraulic, pneumatic, plumbing and marine sanitation, refrigeration, electrical, mechanical and electronic systems, as well as the diesel generators and the main diesel propulsion engines
\n
• Researching, planning and overseeing maintenance and repair projects and haul-out periods in cooperation with the captain.
\n
• Supervising, evaluating and training as needed all reporting crew members
\n
• Working with all other crewmembers to establish and ensure Best Practices and Procedures
\n
• Being the face of Saltchuk–always appropriately groomed and courteous to passengers and other crew members
\n

Qualifications

\n
• Recent employment as chief engineer aboard yachts or small passenger vessels of 100 to 500 gross tons
\n
• Familiarity with direct-reversing diesel engines
\n
• Familiarity with basic large-yacht systems: Electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, MSD, plumbing, etc.
\n
• Licensed engineer or equivalent experience
\n
• Up-to-date Basic Safety Training
\n

Preferred

\n
• Advanced firefighting training
\n
• Familiarity with 1929 Atlas Imperial direct-reversing diesel engines
\n
• Prefer two years attendance at a trade school, junior college or university in a program of marine engineering courses
\n

Experience & Skills

• Minimum 5 years of ship board engineering experience
\n
• Strong communication, presentation, and collaboration skills

• Ability to learn and operate all the yacht’s mechanical systems

• A flexible schedule is required – schedules include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

• Base annual salary range:$100,000-115,000 depending on years of experience
