Registered Polysomnographic Technologist - Nights, Sleep Center

Job Summary A Polysomnographic Technologist works under the general supervision of the clinical director (M.D., D.O., or Ph.D.) or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services, patient care and education. The technologist collects, analyzes, and integrates patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs, determine final testing parameters with the ordering physician or clinical director, and to document procedures, calibrate equipment, apply electrodes and sensors, perform physiologic calibrations, and conduct therapeutic interventions such as PAP mask fitting, oxygen titration, Multiple Sleep Latency Test, Maintenance of Wakefulness Test, and parasomnia studies. Responsibilities Complete and verify documentation, explaining pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to patients. Prepare and calibrate equipment to ensure proper functioning; make adjustments if necessary. Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards and perform appropriate physiologic calibrations. Perform PAP mask fitting and follow procedural protocols for MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration, etc. to ensure collection of appropriate data. Follow "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values (body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.) and monitor polysomnographic data acquisition while ensuring artifact-free signals. Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation. Implement appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapeutic intervention (continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.). Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events according to center-specific protocols; generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data. Educational Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent is required. A graduate with a certificate of completion from a two-year training program in polysomnography is preferred, or related field such as respiratory therapy. The equivalent of education and experience for the performance of duties assigned to this position and that meet the requirements for national credentialing in Polysomnography and the New York State Licensing Board for Polysomnography is required. Experience and Skills Clinical experience as a Respiratory Therapist and/or Polysomnographic Technologist preferred. Demonstrated knowledge and skills to recognize and provide age-specific care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Oversee and perform difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions. Licenses and Certifications New York State licensed as a Polysomnographic Technologist, Respiratory Therapist, or Respiratory Therapy Technician is required. Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) issued by the National Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT). Current BLS/ACLS certification required with recertification every two years.
