Chiller Mechanic

Malace|HR is seeking an experienced Chiller Mechanic to maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and optimize large commercial chilled-water systems supporting a college campus. This position is responsible for ensuring reliable cooling for academic buildings, residence halls, laboratories, and other campus facilities.

The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience with large-tonnage commercial chillers, central chilled-water plants, and associated mechanical equipment.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of large commercial air-cooled and water-cooled chillers
• Diagnose and repair centrifugal, screw, and reciprocating chillers
• Work on equipment from major manufacturers such as Trane, York, Carrier, and Daikin
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, refrigerant, and chiller control issues
• Perform refrigerant recovery, evacuation, charging, leak detection, and system repairs in accordance with EPA regulations
• Inspect and maintain compressors, evaporators, condensers, controls, sensors, motors, starters, and related chiller components
• Monitor chiller performance, operating pressures, temperatures, refrigerant levels, and system efficiency
• Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on chilled-water systems
• Maintain and repair associated equipment including cooling towers, condenser water pumps, chilled-water pumps, heat exchangers, valves, expansion tanks, and hydronic piping
• Troubleshoot chilled-water flow, condenser water, temperature, pressure, and system performance issues
• Utilize Building Automation Systems (BAS) and chiller control interfaces to monitor equipment operation and diagnose problems
• Read and interpret blueprints, P&IDs, electrical schematics, equipment diagrams, and manufacturer service documentation
• Complete service reports, preventive maintenance documentation, and work orders accurately
• Respond to emergency chiller outages and participate in an on-call rotation as required
• Coordinate with campus facilities personnel, vendors, and contractors when necessary
• Follow all applicable safety procedures, campus policies, and regulatory requirements

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; HVAC/R technical or trade school training preferred
• Minimum 5+ years of experience servicing large commercial or industrial chillers
• Strong hands-on experience with centrifugal and/or screw chillers
• Experience with large central chilled-water plants strongly preferred
• Strong knowledge of refrigeration systems, compressors, electrical components, controls, chilled-water systems, and condenser-water systems
• EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification required
• Experience troubleshooting chillers from manufacturers such as Trane, York, Carrier, or Daikin preferred
• Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and chiller control systems
• Ability to independently diagnose and repair complex chiller problems
• Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and manufacturer technical manuals
• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet campus background requirements
