Agency Department of Corrections Salary Range $5,872 - $7,980 (non‑PERS qualifying applicants) Position Type Employee Job Description The Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a Correctional Officer for Deer Ridge Correctional Institution in Madras, Oregon. The role requires establishing limits, modeling good conduct, and facilitating positive change for adults in custody. Candidates will attend the Basic Corrections Course (BCC), an on‑the‑job training that begins immediately upon hiring and includes classroom instruction, health and fitness classes, force skills training, and a comprehensive Field Training Evaluation Program (FTEP). Responsibilities (Nature of the Work) Work in a team setting to maintain order and enforce rules and regulations. Provide care to ensure safety and security for institutional staff and incarcerated adults. Conduct cell checks, searches for contraband, and enforce discipline. Observe, inspect, and report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards. Supervise inmates’ work assignments and monitor their activities. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. 21 years of age or older. United States citizenship. Meet DPSST Physical Standards. Reading comprehension, report writing, and retention abilities. Pass a background investigation (OAR 259‑008‑0015). Special Qualifications Pass the NTN test with a minimum score of 70% in all areas. Good employee work history. History of law‑abiding behavior (OAR 259‑008‑0070). Pass a psychological evaluation and risk assessment as required by HB 2936. No evidence of substance abuse. Proficient in computer use. Valid driver’s license. Subject to prohibited substance testing. Required & Requested Skills Good ratings in teamwork, control of situations, support of management goals, integrity, communication, and collaboration. Acceptable ratings in grammar use and written content understanding. Low risk ratings for professional conduct with offenders, appropriate use of authority, and public safety experience.
