Assistant Payroll Manager

Assistant Payroll Manager – Full‑time, Administrative Exempt Location: Cheney, Washington Salary Range: $68,278 – $92,981 (starting pay depends on education, experience, and skills) Key Responsibilities Lead, supervise, and mentor payroll staff to deliver timely, accurate payroll processing. Ensure compliance with university policies, state and federal payroll regulations. Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation of payroll procedures and internal controls. Provide ongoing training and professional development for payroll staff. Resolve payroll inquiries from employees and departments, delivering timely, accurate responses. Collaborate with the Payroll Manager on continuous process improvements and system testing. Oversee year‑end closeout activities and payroll disclosures for financial statements. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a closely related field. Progressive responsibility in payroll processing or a related field. Demonstrated leadership and staff development skills. Strong documentation skills with a focus on internal controls. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills. Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects within established deadlines. Commitment to ethical leadership and a supportive team‑oriented environment. Preferred Qualifications Master of Business Administration, Certified Payroll Professional (CPP), or equivalent. Experience in payroll operations within a college or university setting. Hands‑on system administration experience with Ellucian Banner HR/Payroll module or a similar ERP system. Three years of combined experience in automated ERP payroll processing, deduction reporting, and payroll account analysis for a large corporate or government entity. Other Skills and Abilities Analytical problem‑solving and change implementation skills. Discretion, tact, and good judgment in handling sensitive information.
