As a Manager, U.S. Medical Affairs, Liver Strategy at Gilead you will report to the Executive Director, Head USMA Liver Group and will support the development, management, and execution of U.S. Medical Affairs liver strategy in PBC, HDV, and across the portfolio.
The Manager will play a critical role in translating USMA Liver strategy into high-quality, scientifically rigorous, compliant, and field-ready medical materials, digital resources, conference/symposium deliverables, and cross-functional planning initiatives. This individual will support across-portfolio content creation and lifecycle management through Medical Review Committee (MRC), help manage digital and AI-enabled medical platforms, and contribute to congress, conference, and symposium strategy and execution.
The ideal candidate is scientifically minded, creative, highly organized, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, matrixed environment. This person should have strong Medical Affairs content experience, outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across USMA Liver, Field Medical, Global Medical Affairs (GMA), Medical Information, Legal, Compliance, Commercial, Training, Operations, and external agency partners.
This role is based in Foster City, California.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Support the development and execution of USMA Liver strategy across key liver disease priorities, including PBC, HDV, other viral hepatitis, and emerging portfolio needs.
Work in close partnership with more senior team members on USMA Liver strategy and translation of strategy to content
Serve as a key content and scientific contributor for USMA Liver, helping translate complex clinical, real-world, guideline, and congress data into clear, balanced, compliant medical communications.
Lead or support creation, revision, review, approval, deployment, and lifecycle management of USMA Liver medical materials, including scientific slide decks, field-facing resources, FAQs, training materials, advisory board content, congress summaries, symposia materials, and digital medical education assets.
Manage content through the U.S. Medical Review Committee (MRC) process, including preparation of submissions, coordination of reviewer feedback, version control, incorporation of comments, and driving materials to timely approval.
Ensure medical content is scientifically accurate, balanced, strategically aligned, appropriately referenced, compliant, and consistent with USMA Liver priorities and the needs of field-based Medical Scientists and other stakeholders.
Support pull-through and appropriate adaptation of Global Medical Affairs content for U.S. use, while helping develop original U.S.-specific liver medical materials when needed.
Partner closely with Field Medical leadership and Medical Scientists to ensure resources are field-ready, practical, impactful, and aligned to priority HCP and KOL audiences.
Lead and support digital medical content and platform initiatives for USMA Liver, including digital journeys, medical websites, email campaigns, Veeva CLM/MedDocs or related platforms, and other non-personal engagement channels.
Contribute to USMA Liver digital and AI-enabled innovation efforts, including identification, evaluation, and implementation of compliant use cases that may improve medical content quality, insight generation, HCP education, or operational efficiency.
Support conference, congress, and symposium strategy and execution, including planning, internal preparation, content development, session coverage strategy, insight capture, post-congress summaries, encore planning, and cross-functional coordination.
Work collaboratively with USMA Liver colleagues, GMA, Medical Information, Medical Communications, Commercial, Clinical Development, Legal, Regulatory, Compliance/Business Conduct, Training, Operations, and agency partners to ensure aligned and compliant execution.
Manages external vendor partnerships supporting USMA initiatives, including scope development, budget oversight, contract execution, timeline management and delivery of high-quality projects that advance strategic objectives.
Help establish and maintain strong content management practices, including clear intake processes, workback plans, editorial standards, templates, reference standards, version control, and asset inventory management.
Monitor emerging data, publications, guidelines, congress updates, and external scientific trends to identify implications for USMA Liver content, strategy, and stakeholder education.
Support U.S. Medical Affairs publication strategy and execution, including coordination of abstracts, posters, presentations, manuscripts, publication planning activities, and dissemination of scientific data.
Lead or support planning, development, review, approval, and execution of congress encore presentations, including cross-functional coordination, content adaptation, vendor management, and dissemination strategy consistent with Medical Affairs objectives and compliance requirements.
Support scientific narrative development and continuous refinement of liver medical messages, ensuring clarity, consistency, and alignment across materials and channels.
Help coordinate training, launch, distribution, and adoption of approved medical resources across field medical, digital platforms, and relevant cross-functional teams.
Manage multiple projects, vendors, timelines, and stakeholders simultaneously with strong prioritization, attention to detail, and proactive risk escalation.
Uphold Gilead core values and ensure all activities comply with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.
Requirements:
Education:
Bachelors (in life sciences, health-related, or scientific area) and 6+ years of relevant experience required OR
Masters (in life sciences, health-related, or scientific area) and 4+ years of relevant experience required OR
PhD (in life sciences, health-related, or scientific area) and 0+ years of relevant experience required
Experience:
Scientific, clinical, Medical Affairs, Medical Communications, Clinical Development, or related biopharmaceutical experience
Pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry experience, particularly within Medical Affairs, Medical Communications, Clinical Development, Medical Information, or related functions
Experience developing, revising, reviewing, and managing Medical Affairs content, including slide decks, scientific narratives, educational resources, infographics, videos, digital assets, or congress materials
Experience with digital medical content, digital engagement platforms, medical websites, CLM/MedDocs, Veeva or related systems, AI-enabled tools, or innovative HCP education channels
Strong scientific acumen and ability to interpret clinical data, publications, guidelines, real-world evidence, and complex scientific issues.
Excellent written, verbal, visual, and interpersonal communication skills; able to translate complex science into clear, concise, balanced, and actionable materials for internal and external scientific audiences.
Demonstrated creativity and problem-solving ability, with capacity to generate practical solutions in a dynamic and evolving Medical Affairs environment.
Strong project management skills, including ability to manage multiple workstreams, vendors, timelines, review cycles, and deliverables simultaneously.
Track record of effectively sharing work across multiple complex projects
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to anticipate needs, prioritize workload, manage ambiguity, and meet timelines in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively across matrixed teams, including USMA Liver, Field Medical, GMA, Medical Information, Medical Communications, Commercial, Legal, Regulatory, Compliance, Training, Operations, and external agency partners.
Ability to influence without authority, build trusted relationships, and drive alignment across stakeholders.
Committed to continuing education and maintaining a strong knowledge base in liver disease, Medical Affairs best practices, digital innovation, and the evolving scientific landscape.
Able to work with a high level of autonomy and independence while maintaining appropriate alignment with leadership and cross-functional partners.
Must be fully aware of and compliant with regulatory, legal, and Business Conduct requirements for Medical Affairs activities.
Preferred:
Experience with medical material review processes such as MRC/MLR/PRC strongly preferred, including understanding of compliant scientific communication and promotional versus non-promotional standards.
Liver disease experience, including PBC, HDV, HBV, HCV, cholestatic liver diseases, or adjacent therapeutic areas, strongly preferred.
