Job Title: CVICU Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 2 years License: Required Certifications: ACLS, BLS Must-Have: Experience with fresh open heart patients or greater than 6 hours postoperative open heart patients CRRT experience Temporary Pacemakers and Post Permanent Pacemaker experience Acute MI Pre/Post catheterization experience Mediastinal/Chest tubes experience Ventilator experience Hypothermia Protocol experience Experience with various IV medications and drips Arterial Line experience Description: The unit contains a bed capacity of 18 with mixed acuity patients including step-down and ICU status. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:1 for fresh hearts and devices, 1:2 for ICU status patients, and 1:3 for step-down status patients. Common diagnoses and types of patients include atrial fibrillation, heart blocks, bradycardia, NSTEMI, STEMI, cardiac arrest, hyper/hypotension, pulmonary embolisms, cardiogenic shock, heart surgery, cardiac failure, and thoracic surgery. Registered Nurses are required to titrate various medications, including Cardizem, Cordarone, Cardene, Nitroglycerin, Esmolol, Cleviprex, Milrinone, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Lasix, Bumex, Epinephrine, Levophed, Vasopressin, Insulin, Heparin, Aggrastat, Precedex, Propofol, Versed, and Fentanyl. There is a rare potential for nurses to work charge shifts on nights, with assignments being taken. Nurse aids are present on the unit with a ratio of 1-2 per shift. Respiratory therapy is available in the ICU 24/7. Monitoring of patients is conducted by monitor techs off the unit, with nurses addressing alarms and reading their own strips every four hours. Self-scheduling and block scheduling requests are allowed and often granted, but adjustments may be made to meet the needs of the unit. Weekend and holiday requirements are based on unit needs. Traveling nurses may float primarily to acute care and ICU settings, but may also float to Med-Surg and Telemetry units with a maximum of 6 patients. Scrub color for the unit is royal blue. Orientation includes one week of training, along with module completion and system training. Candidates must possess the required certifications of ACLS and BLS.
