DEPARTMENT: Office of the Sheriff Salary Band: $52,504.00 - $89,467.00 Office of the Sheriff of Durham County seeks BLET-certified Deputy Sheriffs to serve the community. Typical Responsibilities Operate a patrol car on an assigned shift to observe violations of laws, suspicious activities or persons, and disturbances of law and order. Respond to radio dispatches and answer calls and complaints. Serve warrants, summons, subpoenas, capiases, court orders, notices, attachments, claims and deliveries, ejections, executions, and other legal papers, and make arrests. Testify in court. Assist in domestic disputes. Direct traffic for funerals and other public gatherings. Assist other law enforcement officers in investigations. Serve as court bailiff and prisoner guard. Report unsafe conditions existing on the street or other public facilities. Assist with criminal investigations by presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, preparing property and evidence, recording and issuing of evidence in court cases. Transport prisoners, mental patients and others as required. Perform bailiff and court security duties as assigned. Perform related tasks as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures. General knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings. Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff’s Department. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports. Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public. Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances. Ability to develop skills in the use of firearms and the operation of motor vehicles. Ability to maintain physical agility and endurance. Requirements Must have a current NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Certification. Must have or be able to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license. Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor. Special Requirements Must be able to work 12-hour rotating shifts, which includes holidays and weekends.
