Youth Guidance Specialist Supervisor,Juvenile Justice Center Job Number: 2172 Location: 5905 N. Classen Blvd Supervisor: Community and Programs Manager Phone: View phone number on click.appcast.io Fax: View phone number on click.appcast.io Description General Purpose Works to create a safe and empowering atmosphere for the residents of the OCJDC, helping to ensure their needs are identified and met. Assists with oversight and implementation of trauma‑informed practices and services. Works with residents and staff to promote optimum mental health and may help with family and parenting problems, issues of self‑harm, stress management, problems with self‑esteem, and problems associated with mental and emotional matters. Supervision Received Works under the supervision of the Community and Programs Manager; however, in his/her absence, they shall report to the Deputy Director. Supervision Exercised Exercises direct supervision over the YGS Department, Lead Youth Guidance Specialist, Facility Volunteer/Activity Coordinator, and Youth Guidance Specialist (YGS). Essential Duties and Responsibilities Understands, practices, and promotes the mission and vision of the OCJB. Believes in youth and family potential and guides detention staff to support the success of youth. Provides ongoing leadership, communication, and supervision to the Lead (YGS), Facility Volunteer/Activity Coordinator, and YGS to ensure the YGS Department meets OCJDC needs and works in accordance with the Oklahoma County Juvenile Bureau’s (OCJB) mission, vision, and goals. Understands the impact of trauma and applies Trust‑Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) principles (connecting, empowering, and correcting) to daily interaction and OCJDC procedure. Maintains daily focus on the department's service philosophy when interacting with youth and staff. Actively works to create a safe and empowering atmosphere for growth and ensures residents’ needs are met. Takes initiative to develop positive connections with all residents through frequent formal and informal interaction. Guides residents to identify triggers and utilize coping skills/self‑regulation through daily interactions and activities. Guides residents to identify and participate in their “Sparks,” (passions, hobbies, and/or interests that give their life meaning), when possible. Takes a leadership role in planning and conducting team‑building activities that serve to facilitate connection between residents and staff, at least quarterly. Provides group and individual mentoring for residents within the OCJDC. Facilitates TBRI nurture groups and other therapeutic groups. Fulfills YGS requests to address resident’s needs. Directs crisis intervention efforts to include suicide risk assessments and behavioral management plans. Participates in the creation and implementation of special management plans for residents as needed. Creates and monitors safety‑based restrictions for residents. Communicates with administration, supervisors, medical staff, the Court Services Department, and the Office of Juvenile Affairs (OJA) to provide guidance for care needed throughout each resident’s stay and ensure proper referrals are made upon release for residents needing follow‑up services. Works closely with the Lead YGS, Facility Volunteer/Activity Coordinator, and YGS, and other staff to ensure that activities including, but not limited to, resident/staff “Sparks,” team building activities, and nurture groups are formally scheduled and executed. Identifies, develops, and provides training and guidance to trainees and assigned officers to assist in their skill attainment in areas including, but not limited to, TBRI. Serves as a leader and role model in the application of trauma‑informed care and intervention. Works to unify staff as one (1) treatment team. Participates in all program requirements such as department meetings. Notes The duties listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Experience Possesses maturity, judgment, and knowledge consistent with the high level of responsibility required. Possesses extensive knowledge of and experience in social work techniques and an understanding of trauma, community resources, family dynamics, cultural diversity, and substance abuse issues. Possesses the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Possesses skills in securing and maintaining trust, confidence, and cooperation of residents. Possesses the ability to consult with staff, attorneys, and others. Possesses skills in the use of computers, audiovisual equipment, copy machines, and telephones. Possesses skills in handling confidential work and in working with the public in a tactful and discrete manner. Possesses the leadership ability and supervisory skills required to motivate other employees to work together to accomplish a common objective. Possesses skills in working cooperatively and in communicating effectively with other professional groups, in exercising mature judgment in dealing with people, in the application of individual problems in social services, in understanding and presenting ideas clearly and accurately, and in reading and comprehending the English language. Tools and equipment used: Computer terminals, copy machines, audiovisual equipment, telephones, and fax machines. Education Required Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of six (6) years of relevant further education and/or experience in counseling, social work, mental health, psychology, direct care in juvenile detention, or a closely related field.
