Peer Advisor

UAA Peer Advisors serve as a first point of contact for students providing peer level support and guidance on academic processes, university resources, student success strategies, and utilization of UAA technologies. Peer Advisors enhance students’ understanding of university policy and support networks while fostering a sense of belonging.

UAA Peer Advisors are a vital part of the academic support network, serving as the first point of contact for students seeking guidance. Housed within the academic advising department, Peer Advisors provide peer-level support on academic processes, institutional resources, student success strategies, and key university technologies. While not a substitute for professional advisors, they play a critical role in helping students navigate registration, course prerequisites, financial aid basics, and tools like DegreeWorks—ultimately enhancing understanding of university policies, reducing wait times, and fostering a sense of belonging.

Successful Peer Advisors are approachable, dependable student leaders who enjoy helping others. They should have strong communication skills, a basic understanding of UAA’s academic systems, and a willingness to learn and apply university policies. The ability to problem-solve, work collaboratively, and maintain professionalism in a fast-paced student services environment is key to supporting fellow students effectively.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and experience:
● Currently enrolled in at least 6 credits at UAA and in good academic and disciplinary
standing
● Must have completed a minimum of 15 credits
● Minimum 2.5 Cumulative GPA
● Familiarity with or willingness to learn UAA systems and software platforms such as
Blackboard, Google Suite, Microsoft Word, EAB Navigate, and more.

Preferred Education and Experience:
● Customer service, mentorship, tutoring, and/or leadership experience
● One (1) year of work/volunteer experience, particularly in a university setting

Position Details:

This position is located at the University of Alaska campus in Anchorage. This is a Student Assistant 2 position, part-time up to 20 hours a week with starting pay $17.19 an hour.

Per Board of Regents policy, student employment should not exceed 20 hours per week. Students must disclose to the hiring manager if they are employed in any other student positions.
