Electronic Industrial Controls Mechanic- Fire Systems

Summary The position is located at the Oklahoma City Veterans Affairs Healthcare System (OKCVAHCS) in Oklahoma City - Oklahoma and is assigned to the Facilities Management Service (FMS). The Electronic Industrial Controls Mechanic receives general work‑related instructions or assignments. This position primarily conducts duties at the OKCVAHCS, but at times may be required to travel to the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in the catchment area. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience : A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience sufficient in scope and quality to perform the duties of this position. Evidence that demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Screen‑out Element : Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the job elements: Electronics Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, Ingenuity, Test Equipment, Electronics Troubleshooting (Electronic Equipment), Use of Hand and Power Tools, Electronics—without more than normal supervision. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience—including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies—knowledge and skills—and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience—including volunteer experience. A full year of work is considered 35–40 hours per week. Part‑time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours per week spent in such employment. Duties Major duties of this position include but are not limited to mastery of direct digital control (DDC) systems, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and building automation systems. Performs preventive maintenance inspections and tasks on electronic fire systems and related components to determine wear, reliability, and load capabilities. Must performance metrics: system uptime, commissioning quality, efficiency improvements, and minimized service tickets. Plans layout and installation of fire controls wiring, equipment, or fixtures based on job specifications and local codes. Assembles, installs, tests, or maintains electronic wiring, equipment, apparatus, or fixtures using proper tools. Uses proper techniques and knowledge of fire electronics; makes data‑driven decisions through troubleshooting. Performs preventative and corrective maintenance to ensure system reliability and efficiency. Makes efficient repairs to cut energy waste and operating costs. Tests fire systems or equipment or fixtures using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes to ensure compatibility and safety. Maintains all electronic and power tools; repairs or replaces wiring, equipment, or fixtures using hand or power tools. Inspects fire systems, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or need for adjustment or repair, and ensures compliance with codes. Troubleshoots circuits, controls, and systems to locate, repair, and replace defective components. Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, or components using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. Read schematics and wiring diagrams; possesses knowledge of AC circuit analysis for fire equipment; analyzes circuits, diagnoses faults, and implements repairs effectively. Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Position description title/PD#: Electronic Industrial Controls Mechanic – Fire Systems/PD14762A. Physical requirements: incumbents must perform moderate to heavy physical effort over an eight‑hour period (which may extend if overtime or off‑hours work is required). Includes lifting, crawling, climbing, bending, etc. When working on platforms, scaffolding, and ladders, workers must climb, carry, and lift tools and materials. Physical or muscular effort includes fatigue‑producing actions such as working overhead, lifting, pushing, pulling, crawling, climbing, stooping, stretching, standing, sitting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and other potentially uncomfortable positions. Strenuous effort is required while dismantling and reassembling equipment. Incumbent frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. Incumbent shall seek assistance with heavier items. Incumbent must work from ladders, scaffolding, etc., where parts of systems are frequently in hard‑to‑reach places. Hand dexterity is critical for completing most tasks. Working conditions: work performed both inside and outside. Inside work typically occurs in well‑lit, heated, and ventilated areas. Exposure to chemicals and potential inhalation of harmful fumes from oils, gases, refrigerants, etc. Irritation of eyes, skin, or respiratory tract may result from equipment maintenance and/or repairs. Ladder climbing and high‑place work is routine. Incumbent must always be very safety conscious. Outside work: exposure to a variety of weather conditions—cold and hot, windy, wet, etc.—work must be completed regardless of better weather. Incumbent may be exposed to extreme heat such as steam, ultra‑cold freezers, and subzero weather with below‑zero wind‑chill factors. Incumbent may work in areas with unpleasant fumes or odors and must wear assigned personal protective equipment. Incumbent may work on rooftops of tall buildings and cramped areas. Incumbent may be subjected to cuts, burns, electrical shock, or refrigerants. Uncomfortable face masks and protective clothing are necessary when working with hazardous materials and large amounts of refrigerants. Incumbent may work near asbestos‑containing materials. Perform duties in all areas of the facility—from offices to high‑noise mechanical rooms and interstitial spaces—requiring kneeling, stooping, crawling, and ladder climbing. #J-18808-Ljbffr U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
