Job Summary The registered dietitian (RD) collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to provide general nutrition care that is integrated with overall goals of care for adult and/or pediatric patients at risk for nutrition problems in inpatient and outpatient settings. The RD in this classification works in inpatient or outpatient pediatric and adult settings to provide nutrition care for patients with a wide range of clinical problems. Primary responsibilities include nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention and evaluating clinical outcomes; coordination of daily work for dietetic technician(s) (DTR) assigned to area (SF only), support DA formula prep tasks; participation in compliance, department projects, and quality performance improvement efforts; active involvement on interdisciplinary teams and committees; and contributions to the supervision of dietetic interns, and teaching assigned classes. The RD maintains professional competence and continuing education per regulatory requirements. Job Description In this role, the RD provides nutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and evaluation of clinical outcomes at intervals based upon nutritional risk or acuity, following policy and regulatory requirements. The RD also serves as a liaison between patients and patient food services staff to promote customer service initiatives and patient satisfaction. Performance criteria are used to evaluate whether functions are being met. Responsibilities Provides nutrition care according to UCSF standards of care and UCSF policies and procedures; Assesses nutritional status, plans, implements, monitors, and evaluates specialized nutrition care for patients with complex nutritional and medical diagnoses in assigned areas; Integrates nutrition care with other forms of care being provided to patient; Provides nutrition education and counseling for patients and families; Documents care in patient medical record and department recordkeeping systems; Participates as a member of patient care team; Maintains oversight of DTR clinical work; Attends and contributes to team meetings, rounds and other care coordination activities as applicable to assigned work areas; Coordinates nutrition services with California Children’s Services for patients covered by CCS. Performance Criteria – Nutrition Care Identifies nutrition risk based on priorities of care. Collects and evaluates data that are relevant to nutrition problems and references appropriate comparative standards. Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of nutrition in relation to other forms of care being provided; nutrition care is integrated with medical goals and plan of care. Identifies accurate, relevant, and clear nutrition diagnoses. Identifies appropriate nutrition intervention(s) to address identified nutrition problems and adjusts as clinically indicated. Clear, accurate, timely and concise documentation utilizes the Nutrition Care Process and follows policies and regulatory requirements. Advocates for patient's nutrition care. Takes initiative and responsibility for assigning and supervising of DTR’s daily work. Demonstrates critical thinking in all areas of providing nutrition care. Performance Criteria – Intra‑ and Interdisciplinary Activities Active and productive participation in team meetings, rounds and other activities related to patient care. Acts as liaison with other departments on issues related to nutrition and food services, presenting a positive image of the NFS Department. Shares information and actively solves problems. Actively participates in development of goals, standards, and procedures for division. Educates colleagues on topics related to clinical nutrition and for performance improvement initiatives. Performance Criteria – Dietetic Internship Education Clearly communicates performance expectations for rotation. Adapts teaching method/style to intern needs and skill levels. Collaborates with DI Coordinator/Director and other RDs to develop and evaluate DI learning activities/ curriculum in the clinical nutrition areas. Organizes work so that both clinical care and teaching responsibilities are met. Leads ongoing evaluation of intern skills, progress, and areas of improvement. Performance Criteria – Advances Competence as Practitioner Evaluates own performance, and plans and implements a program of self‑development based on identified needs, interests and/or limitations. Evaluates information learned and applies to work environment, as appropriate. Participates in advancing the competence of others. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university Successful completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice experience, approved or accredited by Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). A majority of the clinical training must have taken place in a large teaching hospital. Registered Dietitian (RD) or eligible to sit for the RD registration examination and passes exam within 6 months of completing ACEND‑accredited supervised practice program. An RD‑eligible employee works under the direct supervision of an RD.
