Job Title: Senior Electrical Engineer – Control Systems Job Description

This Senior Electrical Engineer role serves as a technical leader for control system development on electromechanical chassis products, including steering and driveline applications. You will apply deep expertise in control systems engineering and project management across the full product development lifecycle, from requirements and architecture through validation and launch. In this position, you coordinate cross-functional activities, manage technical execution against program targets, and support new business pursuits through technical reviews, requirement analysis, and customer-facing engineering support.

Responsibilities

• Lead cross-functional development activities for control system programs, aligning technical deliverables, priorities, and timing with customer expectations and internal milestones.
• Support new business pursuit and RFQ activities by leading technical reviews, evaluating control system requirements, developing compliance matrices, estimating engineering scope, and contributing to customer proposals.
• Lead system-level development of safety-critical control systems for chassis applications, including control architecture definition, closed-loop strategy development, and adherence to ASPICE and internal development processes.
• Own control system requirements, dynamic models, and architecture design, ensuring full traceability throughout the development lifecycle.
• Develop and refine control algorithms, including signal processing, closed-loop controller design and compensation, plant modeling, stability analysis, and performance optimization.
• Define verification strategies and detailed test procedures for control system requirements, including model-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, production, and vehicle-level validation of closed-loop performance.
• Lead development and continuous improvement of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) bench actuator controllers.
• Develop control-oriented interfaces and test tool capabilities in embedded environments, including CAN-based measurement, calibration, tuning, debugging, and customer demonstration support using tools such as CANape and CANoe.
• Analyze, tune, and debug control algorithms, embedded software, and electrical hardware in simulation, laboratory, production line, and vehicle environments.
• Support the launch of new products into production and provide engineering support for products already in production.
• Facilitate communication and strategic coordination between plant operations and engineering teams, including support for troubleshooting, process improvement, and technical reviews.
• Work daily overtime and Saturdays and/or Sundays when directed by the immediate supervisor or as necessary to complete essential job duties.
• Develop and maintain a responsive and cooperative working relationship with internal and external customers, consistently treating others with dignity, trust, and respect.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
• At least 6 years of related automotive experience with chassis electronic components.
• Proven experience in control algorithms development for automotive or electromechanical systems.
• Demonstrated experience with engineering project management, including planning, tracking, and delivering complex technical programs.
• Experience with toolchains including ALM, requirements and traceability management tools, system architecture tools, and test tools.
• Experience with FMEA, FTA, and structured problem-solving techniques such as 8D and 5 Whys.
• Working knowledge and understanding of design, evaluation, and integration of vehicle control systems and/or vehicle subsystems, diagnostics, control modules/software, and electrical systems.
• Strong understanding of classic and modern control theory, including feedback control, compensations (lead/lag, notch, observer, etc.), stability analysis, and design.
• Working knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering, including associated processes and toolchains.
• Working knowledge of MATLAB and Simulink for modeling, simulation, and control development.
• Working knowledge of CAN communication tools such as Vector CANape and CANoe or similar tools related to automotive product development.
• Problem-solving and analytical skills, including the ability to gather complex data, diagnose root causes, separate causes from symptoms, apply lessons learned, anticipate issues, and develop contingency plans.
• Self-starter with strong verbal and written technical communication skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Working knowledge of ASPICE process development and implementation.
• Experience with vehicle dynamics and vehicle model correlation.
• Experience with generative AI, machine learning, and data analysis, including familiarity with relevant toolchains.
• Familiarity with environmental, mechanical, and electrical verification testing methodologies in an automotive or similar environment.
• Experience with safety-critical electric system development (such as steering, brakes, or powertrain) in compliance with ISO 26262.
• Ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams and interface with customers and plant operations.
• Capability to support customer demonstrations and technical discussions using CAN-based measurement and calibration tools.

Work Environment

This role focuses on the development of control systems for electromechanical chassis products in an automotive-oriented environment. You work closely with cross-functional engineering teams, plant operations, and external customers, engaging in activities that span simulation, laboratory testing, production line support, and vehicle-level validation. The position involves extensive use of engineering toolchains, including MATLAB/Simulink, CAN communication tools such as CANape and CANoe, ALM platforms, requirements and traceability management tools, system architecture tools, and various test and HIL bench systems. You may be required to work daily overtime and on Saturdays and/or Sundays when directed to meet program milestones or resolve critical issues. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Plymouth, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $48.00 - $60.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
