CA Conservation Corps

Job Description and Duties

The Conservationist 1 is a crew supervisor position with the following duties: Supervise, train and evaluate young adults (Corpsmembers) between the ages of 18 and 25 performing conservation-related work projects. Instruct, inspire, motivate and ensure the development of safe work habits in crews of young adult Corpsmembers. Supervise Corpsmembers while involved in projects in remote areas or urban settings. Respond to natural disasters such as floods, fires or pest infestations. Assist the further educational development of Corpsmembers during evenings and weekends, if assigned. Maintain time and leave records; develop injury, accomplishment, and disciplinary reports. Teach Corpsmembers the importance of work productivity, teamwork, safe work habits and discipline on work projects; responsible for following CCC-established discipline policies and holding Corpsmembers accountable for their behavior. Recommend disciplinary action when necessary. Evaluate Corpsmembers’ performance. Instruct Corpsmembers in the protection and conservation of California’s natural resources. Instruct Corpsmembers in skills such as: construction, landscaping, erosion control and trail building and maintenance.

Supervision of Corpsmembers during non-work hours (night and weekend supervision, if assigned.) Monitor dormitories and ensure the health and safety of all Corpsmembers on CCC facilities. Monitor the educational attainment of Corpsmembers engaged in non-work educational opportunities. Provide feedback and evaluation to Corpsmembers.

Inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure safe operation; recommend repairs and maintenance. Drive and operate state vehicles and equipment, perform minor repairs and maintenance. Identify, select and train Corpsmember drivers. Assist in their attainment of a Class C Commercial license. CCC-sponsored driver training course(s); maintain time and leave records, approve leave; develop supervisor’s reports of injuries, disciplinary reports and weekly project and safety reports; document conservation awareness activities.

Working Conditions

his position is classified as “In Office” and is not eligible for telework.

The person selected for this position will report to the Fortuna CCC Center at 1500 Alamar Way, Fortuna, CA 95540. The center is located in rural Northern California in a small city just south of the Humboldt County seat: Eureka, CA. The selectee will work on projects within the Fortuna Center service area ranging from the Oregon border south to northern Mendocino County, and from the Pacific Ocean East halfway to Redding. Project work is year-round and located in a variety of environments including beach front, gorgeous redwood forests, mountain trails, rural creeks, and State and National parks; locations that people from all over the world travel to see.

Travel daily to project sites and some overnight travel for Spikes and emergencies.

Special Requirements

Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements prior to being appointed:

• Background Investigation – Undergo fingerprinting and successfully pass a Criminal Offender Record Information check completed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) which may or may not also include a background check through the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

• Medical Exam - A medical clearance exam is required for this classification.

• Commercial Driver License – Provide evidence that a Commercial Class C license with a Passenger Transport Vehicle special endorsement, or equivalent, has been obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

• Pre-employment Drug Test – Pass a urine drug test. In accordance with the Federal Highway Administration regulations (49 CFR, Part 382), persons hired to a class requiring a commercial driver license must take and pass a pre-employment drug test. Please note: Per California Code of Regulations 213.5, applicants who fail the drug test pursuant to section 213.4 (h), will be disqualified from the examination in which they are competing and, except as provided by section 213.5 (e), shall not be eligible to take any State civil service examination for a class for which drug testing is required until one year has elapsed from the date the drug test specimen is given.
