Athletic Trainer

Job Summary Certified Athletic Trainer – MUSC Health, Orangeburg. The role supports the Rehab Services and Sports Medicine Departments while serving Orangeburg County School District student‑athletes at a high school site. The position involves on‑field coverage, injury management, prevention, rehabilitation, referral guidance, and community outreach for athletes across multiple age groups. Job Responsibilities Attend assigned athletic events. Be punctual and professional in attire and behavior 100% of the time. Provide acute evaluation of sports‑related injuries. Monitor exacerbation of chronic conditions requiring medical attention. Utilize professional judgment to triage patients to the appropriate level of care. Actively refer potential patients to MUSC services. Work collaboratively with coaches and athletes. Act as liaison between physician/physical therapist and team coach. Communicate athlete playing status to MD, PT, and coach on a regular basis. Communication Respond to electronic communication and meeting requests in a timely manner. Sends information, including patient history and MOI, to the appropriate healthcare provider for referred athletes. Regularly updates success factors throughout the year. Consistently manages schedule and ATC Calendar. Assessment and Documentation Select and perform appropriate assessment procedures based on accepted practice standards. Conduct assessment of general medical sports‑related conditions, injuries, and fitness to play. Refer to orthopedic surgeon, primary care physician, physical therapist, and psychologist as necessary. Complete documentation for referred athletes on the day of injury/referral in the ATC referral database/system. Complete documentation for non‑referred athletes on the day of injury and update it regularly in the database/system. Accurately document results such as range of motion, strength, reflexes, palpation, visual appearance, diagnosis, treatment plan, and playing status. Treatment and Plan of Care Proficient with taping, bracing, and padding for treatment of acute injuries and prevention. Proficient with wound care on the field for acute sports injuries. Safely and appropriately administer modalities such as ultrasound, electric stimulation, heat, and ice. Knowledgeable about prophylactic bracing and sports‑related durable medical equipment. Develop patient‑specific rehabilitation programs to restore function after injury, aid injury prevention, and enhance athletic performance. Appropriately refer patients to MUSC Sports Medicine services. Coordinate return to play care and maintenance program with treating physician and PT. Health and Wellness Organize and conduct pre‑participation physical screening/assessments. Maintain documentation for PPEs. Identify concerns and refer to appropriate health care provider. Establish a program to monitor athletes’ health status throughout the year. Develop and implement sports performance and conditioning program. Implement injury prevention program for multiple sports. Monitor outcomes of the program. Minimum Training and Education Successful completion of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification (BOC) examination. Current active certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association. Current active licensure by the Department of Health and Environmental Control to practice as an Athletic Trainer in South Carolina or obtain licensure within 6months upon selection. Participation in continuing education (75 CEU every 3years). Additional Requirements Maintain a valid driver’s license. Computer literacy. Ability to work rotating shifts. Ability to work overtime as required. Capacity to learn and use new processes, tools, and equipment as required. Weekend and evening hours to cover practices, games, tournaments, and special events. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in Athletic Training or related field. Previous orthopedic experience. Experience with clinical orthopedic operations. Ability to lift objects up to 75lbs. from floor level to height of 36inches unassisted (frequent). Ability to lower objects up to 75lbs. from height of 36inches to floor level unassisted (frequent). Ability to lift and carry patients weighing up to 300lbs. assisted (frequent). Ability to push/pull objects up to 200lbs. unassisted (frequent). Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected (continuous). Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand (continuous). Ability to see and recognize objects at a distance (continuous). Ability to match or discriminate between colors (continuous). Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception (continuous). Good peripheral vision capabilities (continuous). Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction (continuous). Ability to hear and understand whispered conversations at a distance of 3feet (continuous). Must be able to maintain bilateral hand movement skills (continuous). Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements (continuous). Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually.
