Energy Marshal for Datacenter Construction

Job Summary
The Energy Marshal is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all activities involving hazardous energy, electrical safety, commissioning, startup, testing, and energization activities on a data center construction project. The Energy Marshal serves as the primary authority for ensuring compliance with site-specific Energy Isolation Procedures (EIP), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements, electrical safe work practices, and owner/client energization protocols.

This position works closely with project management, commissioning teams, trade contractors, electrical contractors, equipment vendors, and client representatives to ensure all energization activities are planned, documented, communicated, and executed safely.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Energy Control & Isolation:

  • Manage and oversee the site's Energy Isolation Program.
  • Review, approve, and coordinate Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) activities.
  • Verify proper isolation of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and stored energy systems.
  • Maintain site energy control logs and isolation records.
  • Conduct field verification of lockout boundaries and energy sources.

Energization & Commissioning Support:

  • Coordinate energization schedules with construction, commissioning, and owner teams.
  • Participate in energization planning meetings.
  • Review Method of Procedures (MOPs), Switching Procedures, and Energization Requests.
  • Verify all prerequisites are completed before energization activities begin.
  • Monitor critical switching and startup operations.

Safety Oversight:

  • Conduct field audits of energized work activities.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, and project-specific requirements.
  • Verify qualified personnel are performing electrical work.
  • Stop work when unsafe conditions or procedural violations are identified.
  • Participate in incident investigations involving energy sources.

Documentation & Compliance:

  • Maintain Energization Tracking Logs.
  • Maintain electrical one-line diagrams and isolation records.
  • Review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), and Energization Plans.
  • Ensure all permits and approvals are obtained before work begins.
  • Track temporary power systems and energization status.

Training & Communication:

  • Conduct Energy Marshal orientations and contractor briefings.
  • Lead daily energization coordination meetings as required.
  • Provide guidance regarding LOTO procedures and energy isolation requirements.
  • Communicate changes in system status to affected stakeholders.

Minimum QualificationsEducation

One of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Engineering, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, or related field; OR
  • Associate degree in a related field with additional experience; OR
  • High School Diploma/GED with significant electrical construction and commissioning experience.

Experience

  • 7–10 years of electrical construction, commissioning, or operations experience.
  • 3–5 years serving as an Energy Marshal, Electrical Safety Coordinator, Commissioning Coordinator, Electrical Superintendent, or similar role.
  • Previous experience on hyperscale data center projects.
  • Experience with medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience with UPS systems, generators, switchgear, transformers, and critical power infrastructure.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of electrical safety principles.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 and 1910 requirements.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70E electrical safe work practices.
  • Understanding of commissioning and startup processes.
  • Ability to interpret electrical one-line diagrams and switching procedures.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and electronic permit systems.

Preferred Certifications

One or more of the following:

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction
  • NFPA 70E Training (Current)
  • Authorized Lockout/Tagout Training
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
  • Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)
  • Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (ESCP)
  • Journeyman or Master Electrician License
  • NETA Certification
  • Commissioning certifications (CxA, CCP, or equivalent)

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk extensive construction sites daily.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and access elevated work areas.
  • Ability to wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, safety boots, arc-rated clothing, and fall protection.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
