Background: The Monroe/Lenawee County AFL-CIO Central Labor Council is seeking qualified applicants for the position of AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison with the United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties . The selection will be made according to national AFL-CIO guidelines. A Labor Council selection committee will review applications and conduct interviews.

The United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties is a local non-profit organization with a mission to improve lives through conducting effective fundraising campaigns, allocating United Way funding to support evidence-based programming, and collaborating with community agencies, Organized Labor, businesses, and individuals.

The Monroe/Lenawee AFL-CIO Central Labor Council is a chapter of the National AFL-CIO and is composed of unions in Monroe and Lenawee Counties. It serves as a coordinating body for those affiliate members for fundraising, charitable contributions, worker support, and education of the public about the labor movement.

Hours and Compensation: The standard work week will consist of four eight and one five-and-half hour workdays, totaling of 37.5 hours. Work will be split to support the CLC’s and the United Way’s activities determined by the season and work plan. The position often requires work on nights, weekends, and some holidays. This position is represented by the Laborers International Union of North America and includes membership benefits such as healthcare. Monetary Compensation range is $58,000 – $63,000 annually. 

Qualifications: The following items are required for this position.

• High School Diploma
• Reliable Transportation
• Ability to travel on occasion
• Highly effective verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency with workplace technology

The following are not required but preferred:

• Bachelor's degree or higher
• 5+ years’ workplace experience in non-profit or organized labor
• Familiarity with both non-profit and organized labor groups
• 2+ years’ experience organizing

Key Areas of Responsibility:

• To implement the Key Elements of the AFL-CIO Community Services as described in the AFL-CIO Community Services Program Manual
• To increase Labor support for the United Way campaign
• To cultivate AFL-CIO/United Way and community partnerships
• To carry out special AFL-CIO Community Service assignments
• To Fulfill administrative responsibilities
