About the Role:

Each person served by JFM requires emotional support and guidance in the development of skills related to daily independent living, family and community life. In addition to having developmental disabilities, many people have acute and/or chronic physical, psychiatric, or medical conditions that typically require evaluation and treatment. This position involves direct supervision and administration of recreational activities for this population, with primary emphasis on establishing rapport, providing choices, and actively engaging the people supported within the program and provide appropriate level of activities to meet their interests.

 

What You'll Do:

The Activities Coordinator is responsible to plan, organize, promote, and direct medically approved recreation programs for people with developmental disabilities by performing the following duties:

• Directs and organizes such activities as sports, dramatics, games, and arts and crafts to assist the customers in developing interpersonal relationships, to socialize effectively, and to develop confidence to participate in group activities.
• Regulates content of the program according to people’s capabilities, needs and interests.
• Instructs people in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, concentration, and other activities, to reduce stress and tension.
• Instructs people in calisthenics, stretching / limbering exercises, and individual / group sports.
• Counsels and encourages people to participate in leisure / recreational activities.
• Organizes and coordinates special outings and accompanies people on outings such as Special Olympics, ball games, sightseeing, or picnics to raise awareness of available recreational resources.
• Prepares progress charts and periodic reports for members of treatment team, reflecting peoples’ status in these activities and provide evidence of progress or regression.
• May be involved in training of other staff members and volunteers; reviews their assessments and program goals, and consults with them as needed.
• May train volunteers / program assistants on recreation program implementation.
• May at times serve in a consultative role to other agency program areas.
• Prepares and submits requisitions for needed supplies or equipment.
• Supervise and implement procedures and guidelines that will assure the health and safety of all persons served, staff; and visitors. Establish a high priority for of safe work practices and provide opportunity for team participation while maintaining compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and JFM safety guidelines.

• Education / Experience: Associate’s degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or a minimum of six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively after groups.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of policies, procedures and instructions furnished in written and oral form.

Compensation:

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $20.13–$24.16 per hour , depending on qualifications, experience, education, and other job-related factors. Eligible employees are also offered a comprehensive benefits package.
