About the Role

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist performs diagnostic nuclear medicine imaging studies that support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning across the practice. This role prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals, operates nuclear medicine imaging equipment, and works closely with physicians and clinical team members to acquire high-quality diagnostic images while maintaining strict radiation safety and regulatory compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic nuclear myocardial perfusion/cardiac stress testing in accordance with physician orders and established protocols.
• Prepare, measure, and administer radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with physician orders, dosage calculations, and radiation safety standards.
• Operate gamma camera and nuclear medicine imaging equipment to obtain high-quality diagnostic images while ensuring patient safety and comfort.
• Position patients appropriately for imaging studies and monitor patients throughout procedures for safety, comfort, and adverse reactions.
• Perform required quality control checks on imaging equipment and dose calibrators; maintain accurate records of radioactive material receipt, use, and disposal.
• Accurately process, measure, and document imaging findings to support timely physician review and interpretation.
• Explain procedures to patients, answer questions, and ensure patient comfort and understanding throughout the exam.
• Maintain compliance with the practice's radiation safety program, including ALARA principles, use of dosimetry badges, and proper handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials.
• Maintain accurate patient records and ensure proper documentation within the EMR system.
• Follow infection control, safety, and quality assurance protocols in all aspects of patient care.
• Communicate effectively with providers, clinical staff, and administrative team members to support coordinated patient care.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA standards, radiation safety regulations, and VIS policies always.

Qualifications

• Certification as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) through the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB), or ARRT(N) certification, required.
• Associate or bachelor's degree in nuclear medicine technology from an accredited program required.
• State licensure required, where applicable to the role and scope of practice.
• Active BLS certification required.
• Prior experience performing nuclear medicine imaging in an outpatient, hospital, or imaging center setting preferred.
• Strong knowledge of radiation safety principles, radiopharmaceuticals, and nuclear medicine imaging technique.
• Strong attention to detail, sound clinical judgment, and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with patients, providers, and team members.

Work Environment and Schedule

• Work is performed primarily in a professional outpatient healthcare procedure center, lab, and/or nuclear medicine imaging suite environment.
• This role involves frequent interaction with patients, physicians, clinical team members, and administrative staff.
• The position requires use of gamma camera and nuclear medicine imaging equipment, dose calibrators, computers, phones, and standard clinical or office equipment.
• The role involves exposure to standard healthcare environment conditions, including exposure to low-level radioactive materials, and requires adherence to radiation safety, infection control, privacy, and workplace safety policies.
• Schedule is generally during regular business hours.
• Regular, reliable attendance and punctuality are essential to support exam schedules and team coverage needs.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout the lab or procedure center for extended periods.
• Ability to assist with patient positioning during imaging studies and procedures.
• Ability to use gamma camera and nuclear medicine imaging equipment, dose calibrators, computers, phones, and other standard clinical equipment throughout the workday.
• Ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and in writing with patients and team members.
• Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull supplies, equipment, or materials typically weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to perform duties requiring visual attention to detail, including reviewing images, measurements, and procedural documentation.
