About the Role

CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union is seeking an Accountant I to join our Accounting team. Reporting directly to the Accounting Manager, the Accountant I will support the accuracy and integrity of the Credit Union's financial records by performing general ledger and subsidiary account reconciliations, maintaining financial records, analyzing financial data, and assisting with a variety of accounting functions.

Banking or credit union accounting experience is highly preferred. However, we welcome candidates from outside the banking and financial services industries who have strong accounting experience, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to learn and apply accounting practices within a credit union environment.

This position is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys working with financial data, solving problems, maintaining accurate records, and contributing to a collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

• Balance, reconcile, and update general ledger and subsidiary accounts.
• Maintain accurate and complete financial records in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Research and resolve discrepancies in general ledger and subsidiary accounts.
• Collect, review, and analyze financial data and information.
• Assist with the preparation and maintenance of accounting records and reports.
• Perform accounting-related activities accurately and within established deadlines.
• Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the Credit Union's products, services, and operations.
• Apply sound judgment when analyzing financial information and resolving accounting issues.
• Use accounting systems, Microsoft Excel, and other technology to improve efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls.
• Maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate discretion when handling financial and member information.
• Communicate effectively with colleagues and other internal and external contacts as needed.
• Ensure assigned responsibilities are completed accurately and timely in accordance with Credit Union policies, procedures, and applicable requirements.
• Perform other accounting-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field preferred; equivalent education, specialized accounting coursework, or relevant work experience may be considered.
• 2–5 years of accounting experience preferred.
• Banking, credit union, financial institution, or financial services accounting experience is highly preferred.
• Candidates with strong accounting experience outside of banking or financial services are encouraged to apply and will be considered based on the relevance and depth of their accounting background.
• Experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, financial reporting, or similar accounting functions is strongly preferred.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to collect information, establish facts, identify discrepancies, and draw sound conclusions.
• Ability to organize information and manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
• Ability to learn new systems, processes, and technologies quickly.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to work effectively and professionally with colleagues, members, and the general public.
• Demonstrated integrity, discretion, diplomacy, and sound judgment when handling confidential information.
• Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a team environment.
