Respite Specialist

Position Overview Position Title: Crisis Respite Center (CRC) Peer Specialist Location: Parachute NYC The CRC provides an innovative “hospital diversion” model, offering temporary residential/respite care to persons seeking support during a psychosis‑related crisis. In a warm, safe, home‑like environment, participants receive 24‑hour peer support, self‑advocacy education, self‑help training, and mutual understanding. The program offers a short‑term (one day to two weeks) residential alternative that enables individuals to maintain daily activities and connect with community‑based services, including primary care. Services are recovery‑oriented, incorporating Need Adapted Treatment and Intentional Peer Support. Parachute NYC is a CMS‑funded pilot project that supports a continuum of community‑based services for those experiencing a psychosis‑related crisis, including mobile crisis teams and CRCs. Compensation Minimum Salary: $45,000.00 per year Maximum Salary: $50,000.00 per year Qualifications Certification or provisional certification as a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) through OASAS, OMH, or CRPA. Active participation in self‑help activities, peer support or peer advocacy programs, or experience in participant‑run organizations. Lived experience with the mental health and/or substance use treatment system and willingness to share personal experience appropriately and respectfully. Understanding of the community in which the team is based and awareness of available community resources. Experience working with adults impacted by mental health disorders. Demonstrated progress toward personal recovery. Excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to empathize with, relate to, and work effectively with participants. Willingness to disclose recovery story, where appropriate, for empowerment purposes. Good judgment and understanding of boundaries when working with participants. Clear understanding of community diversity and needs. Ability to document and translate member needs through a trauma‑informed, culturally competent lens. Strong critical thinking, problem‑solving, and de‑escalation skills to create a recovery‑promoting environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel. Bilingual ability is a plus. Minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent (or higher).
