Terms of Employment: 12 month employee

Salary Range: $33.42

Summary: The School Custodian is responsible for providing a clean, safe and orderly learning environment for students, staff and visitors. The position performs routine cleaning to assigned areas, basic maintenance and ensures compliance with district safety and sanitation standards. The custodian will work with Building administration and maintenance staff to ensure the timely reporting of building maintenance issues.


Qualification(s): The successful candidate will have the following:

1. Education

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required

1. License

• Must have a valid Illinois Operator's License or Valid Illinois I.D.

1. Experience

• Two years prior job-related experience in school or institutional building maintenance or related trade preferred .

1. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Arrange: Furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events (i.e., regular school, community events, special events set up and break down tables, chairs, audio visual equipment as directed).
• Cleans: School facilities, Administrative Service Center, Transportation Hub (i.e., classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, grounds, windows, restrooms, sinks, carpets, floors, garbage cans, wastebaskets, gym, cafeteria, and other areas as directed by (Building Administrator or Immediate Supervisor) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
• Using a variety of custodial equipment and products cleans and maintains an assigned section of a school building or district site.
• Delivers: Variety of items (e.g., supplies, mail, packages, furniture) for the purpose of distributing the materials to the appropriate parties.
• Informs: Building Administrator and Immediate Supervisor, other site personnel and students for the purpose of providing information regarding activities, safety and / or proper maintenance of facilities
• Requests equipment and supplies through the Building Administrator and Immediate Supervisor for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items as needed to properly maintain building operations and functionality.
• Rotate between various buildings as needed to ensure adequate coverage during staff absences.
• Reports other needed repairs to the Building Administrator/ Immediate Supervisor.
• Maintains grounds and operates equipment as required.
• Visually checks fire/security alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting systems for damage or operational problems.
• Ensures that the area is left in a safe, secure condition.
• Securesfacilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, loss and liability and ensuring safety at work site (i.e., unlock & lock doors, secure gates, check windows, turn lights off/on; operate heating plant and equipment).
• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
• Custodians who have been assigned as Groundskeeper will maintain grounds and operate equipment as required.
• Groundskeeper will rotate in the absence of a custodian and will be responsible for the daily tasks of the absent Custodian.
• Using a variety of custodial equipment and products cleans and maintains an assigned section of a school building or district site.
• Removes ice and snow on school property as required.
• Performs routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs. Reports other needed repairs to the Building Administrator/ Immediate Supervisor.
• Visually checks fire/security alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting systems for damage or operational problems and reports immediate repairs to Building Administrator/Immediate Supervisor.
• Sets up and breaks down tables, chairs for school and community events.
• Assist with the transport of audio visual equipment as directed.
• Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the District.
• Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
• Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Administrator and Immediate Supervisor.

Work Environment

1. Environmental Factors:

• Work outside and inside, exposure to hot and cold temperatures
• Exposure to dust, toxic chemicals, and material when provided with the appropriate protective equipment.
• Slippery or uneven walking surfaces
• Work on ladders with assistance as required by OSHA standards.
• Work mostly alone in individual area

• Lifting 75 pounds occasionally with additional assistance, 35 pounds frequently with occasional sitting and frequent stand/walking with additional assistance.

Evaluation : Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of Board policy for Custodial and Maintenance employees.
