Job Summary Police Officer – Lateral opening for Vernon Police Department (VPD). Monthly salary ranges from $9,607 to $11,678. This recruitment establishes an eligibility list for recent California State Police Academy graduates or current California police officers. The recruitment is continuous and may close at any time with or without prior notice. Essential Functions Enforce state and federal laws, and City regulations; perform work according to VPD policies to enforce laws, preserve peace, solve problems, and provide a safe residential and business environment through community policing; duties will vary according to assignment. Provide community‑oriented police services, improve the quality of life in partnership with the community, and work with citizens to address safety, crime, and neighborhood problems; assure citizens are treated with courtesy and respect for individual liberties. Preserve peace through mediation, investigation, intervention, assistance, and arrest; utilize lawful means to improve quality of life by recognizing and resolving problems. Patrol the City, identifying unusual and suspicious activities and persons, recognizing criminal activity, and using reasonable cause to stop vehicles and initiate contact with persons of interest. Respond to emergency and non‑emergency calls; investigate, document, and resolve citizen complaints, traffic incidents, crimes, and dangerous activities; interrogate and communicate with victims, witnesses, and suspects; provide scene security for emergency personnel. Enforce traffic regulations, apprehend violators, and assure public safety; apply laws and regulations fairly and consistently. Investigate crimes and accidents; secure and process crime scenes, collect evidence; arrest violators; transport and process suspects, victims, and prisoners. Complete detailed reports and required paperwork; testify in court as directed. Maintain VPD vehicles and equipment to department standards. Assist and coordinate with other emergency services, outside organizations, businesses, and federal, state, and local law‑enforcement agencies. Perform specialized functions in areas of expertise including training, D.A.R.E., canine, and other special enforcement, assessment, surveillance, intervention, and investigative teams. Maintain VPD integrity, professionalism, values, and goals by ensuring all rules and regulations are followed and public trust is preserved. Support the relationship between the City of Vernon and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior; maintain confidentiality of work‑related issues and City information; perform other duties as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED equivalent; completion of training and Peace Officer certification with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and Basic POST certificate. License and Certification Requirements Valid California State Driver’s License. Must maintain Peace Officer certification with POST and Basic POST certification. Upon hire, must complete a minimum of 19 weeks of Field Training. Additional technical training and certifications may be required. Physical Demands and Working Environment Work performed in a standard office environment and in the field on patrol; may be exposed to physical attacks, hazardous chemicals, infectious and communicable diseases; required to physically restrain persons and maintain a level of physical fitness to meet VPD standards.
