Peer Counselor - Part-Time (Grant Funded)

Job Summary Under immediate supervision, the employee performs duties specific to the Project Worth Program or the WIC Program. Responsibilities include performing social and emotional learning activities, developing service-learning projects for Project Worth, documenting and maintaining client records, and teaching classes on the advantages of breastfeeding for the WIC Program. The position does not involve supervisory responsibilities. This position is grant‑funded, unclassified, and does not have disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. It is at‑will, and may be terminated at any time for any reason. Staff in high‑risk positions are required to obtain relevant immunizations per SAMHD Policy DM 13.2, with exemptions considered at the discretion of SAMHD. All staff are expected to apply a health equity lens to programs, services, and decision‑making per SAMHD Policy DM 15.1. Work Location Various WIC Locations Work Hours 7:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m., Monday – Friday Essential Job Functions Teaches classes on the advantages of breastfeeding and the management of normal breastfeeding experiences. Provides information and promotes breastfeeding as the normal way to feed an infant, among peers and community. Counsels pregnant and breastfeeding mothers on a one‑to‑one basis, and provides support and follow‑up as needed. Documents and maintains records. Attends all training provided for Peer Counselors. Teaches use, cleaning, and assembly of breast pumps and expression and storage of human milk. Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required. Job Requirements High School Diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency). Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License. WIC Program Specific Requirements (as required by grant funding requirements) Must have breastfed or expressed breast milk for at least one baby. Must have the ability to work outside of regular clinic hours and outside of the WIC Clinic. Must have completed appropriate training prior to serving as a Peer Counselor to participants. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual in English & Spanish. Current or former participant in the WIC Program. Experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook. Applicant Information Unless otherwise stated, applicants may substitute two years of related full‑time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience to meet the minimum requirements. Applicants selected must pass satisfactory pre‑employment drug testing and background checks. Knowledge of related program and terminology. Ability to utilize Microsoft Office and basic office equipment. Ability to counsel and communicate clearly and effectively. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Ability to comply with all OSHA regulations and current immunization policies. Ability to perform all essential functions of the job. Ability to work in a clinical environment.
