About the Role Manager of Surface Operations to join the Technical Services Team at the Twentymile Mine location. Salary Range: $133,000‑$162,000 annually, depending on experience. Reporting to the Manager of Technical Services, the role effectively manages all aspects of the Coal Preparation Plant, Tipple, Stoker Loadout, Refuse Stockpile, permanent Coal Storage Facilities, and the Train and Truck Steam Loadout Facilities to achieve planned production levels at optimum cost while ensuring shipped product meets contract specifications. Location Twentymile Mine is an underground coal mine located in Colorado’s scenic Yampa Valley, about 20 miles outside Steamboat Springs, a ski resort and vacation destination. Surrounding towns include Oak Creek, Craig, Hayden, and Steamboat Springs. Duties and Responsibilities Oversee management, operation, maintenance, planning, safety, MSHA compliance, and environmental compliance of surface facilities including the coal preparation plant, tipple, stoker loadout, refuse stockpile, permanent coal storage facilities, and train and truck steam loadout facilities. Manage the water distribution system and maintain surface storage yards, roads, and parking areas. Ensure safety and regulatory compliance for all surface employees, vendors, contractors, and visitors. Maintain product quality by monitoring contract specifications, plant yield, and testing procedures to maximize shipped product quality. Control maintenance and operation costs to reduce the overall cost structure of the surface facilities. Lead safety process, including active involvement in the observation and SAWOL process and implementation of SAWOL elements. Supervise surface personnel, enforce Peabody policies, and discipline when warranted. Operate coal preparation facility and mobile equipment safely and cost‑efficiently. Develop and manage cleaning plans and inspection checklists for daily, weekly, and monthly surface operations. Coordinate personnel crew assignments, adjust crew lists, and communicate changes to stakeholders. Promote continuous improvement throughout the surface department. Manage ROM stockpile to reduce spontaneous combustion hazards and track coal quality and age. Implement preventive maintenance and quality control programs for surface facilities and equipment. Maintain communication with surface personnel, transportation coordinator, laboratory staff, governing agencies, and mine management. Work with maintenance planners to develop short‑term and long‑term work lists. Monitor equipment to maximize availability and minimize downtime, costs, and maintenance. Provide training and guidance to improve crews’ skill levels. Communicate surface activity that may impact mine operations, including stockpile, freshwater, and equipment issues. Collaborate with cross‑functional departments on surface tasks such as hauling and loading large items. Ensure environmental compliance, DMG compliance, drainage, dust control, and other surface maintenance items are maintained to a violation‑free standard. Monitor plant circuits, cyclone pressures, and chemical use to maintain optimal performance. Oversee snow plowing and road maintenance activities. Stay current on new coal preparation technology to evaluate economic justification. Work with inventory management to maintain parts for repairs and plan non‑stock item deliveries. Track preparation performance and maintain monthly KPI metrics. Plan, schedule, and organize employees, production schedules, and maintenance schedules to minimize underground production delays. Coordinate required examinations of the Main North escape hoist. Implement the “Peabody Way” into the operations of the preparation plant and other surface facilities. Perform additional tasks as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma required; BS in Engineering preferred. Minimum four years as a supervisor in coal handling and preparation. Minimum two years in a prior management role in a heavy industrial environment. Experience in coal handling, preparation, and supervisory positions for at least four years. Demonstrated leadership, problem‑solving, and communication skills. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for up to four hours per shift and to be seated for up to four hours to operate equipment or vehicles. Ability to work from elevated positions, walk/climb stairs and ladders, and operate equipment safely. Must wear required personal protective equipment, including footwear, hearing, eye protection, and MSHA‑approved gear. Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions, with rapid reflex movements and good hand‑to‑eye coordination. Ability to lift or raise 80lbs. without mechanical assistance frequently. Capacity to work in extreme conditions and in a confined work area. Work various shifts, including days, evenings, nights, rotating schedules, weekends, and holidays. Safety‑sensitive role: must not have uncontrolled conditions affecting driving or operating machinery, or any uncontrolled respiratory, cardiac, or vision impairments that fail minimum requirements (≥20/40 acuity with at least 70° field of vision).
