SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Job Responsibilities Provide student-specific nursing support during the school day as directed by the District, delegated in accordance with law, and required by the student's IEP, health plan, physician orders, or related educational documentation. Serve as the assigned one-to-one paraprofessional/paraprofessional for the student throughout the school day and school-related programming, as directed. Assist the student with access to instruction, transitions, mobility, safety, organization, communication, behavior support, self-help skills, and participation in the school environment, consistent with the IEP. Monitor the student for health, safety, medical, behavioral, and educational needs and promptly communicate concerns to appropriate certified and administrative staff. Implement student-specific instructional, behavioral, safety, and health-related plans under the direction of appropriate professional staff. Maintain appropriate records, logs, data, and documentation as required by the District. Collaborate with teachers, nurses, therapists, special educators, related service providers, and administrators regarding the student's daily functioning and needs. Attend training sessions, meetings, and professional development required by the District or necessary to meet student needs, consistent with the collective bargaining agreement. Assist with toileting, feeding, lifting, positioning, transfers, and other physical care needs when required by the student's program and when permitted by law, training, and District direction. Utilize de-escalation, health and safety, and crisis response procedures as trained and directed by the District. Perform other student-specific duties reasonably related to the dual nursing/paraprofessional role, provided such duties are lawful and within the employee's credentials and training. Assist with the needs of the building when the student is absent Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Director, Superintendent and/or School Committee may find appropriate.

Job Requirements

• Nature of Position This is a temporary, student-specific position created to implement the services required by a particular student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), including both nursing support and one-to-one paraprofessional support. The position shall exist only for so long as the assigned student requires such services under the student's IEP and remains eligible to receive those services within the District. The employee must maintain both required credentials in active and good standing as a condition of continued employment. Failure to maintain any required certification, license, approval, or documentation may result in removal from the assignment and/or disciplinary action, up to and including termination, subject to applicable law and the collective bargaining agreement. This assignment may be modified or discontinued when the student's IEP, residency, placement, enrollment status, or need for services changes, all as determined by the administration. The position does not create a general District-wide nurse paraprofessional classification beyond this student-specific assignment. Reports To Building Principal and/or designee, in consultation with the Director of Special Education, school nurse teacher, and other administrators as designated by the District. Work Year / Schedule Work year, workday, and hours shall be established by the District consistent with student need, the applicable collective bargaining agreement, and the student's educational program.
• Qualifications Current and valid Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing. Current and valid Paraprofessional or Paraprofessional certification, approval, or credential as required by the District, the Rhode Island Department of Education and applicable Rhode Island law, maintained in good standing. Demonstrated ability to work with students with disabilities and to implement IEP-directed services. Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect student records and student information. Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, related service providers, administrators, nurses, and families. Such additional training, medical clearances, or certifications as may be required by law, regulation, District policy, or the student's IEP.
• Limitations on Duties The employee shall perform only those duties permitted by law, regulation, licensure, certification, District policy, and the student's educational and health-related plans. Nothing in this job description authorizes the employee to engage in independent nursing judgment beyond the lawful scope of the RN role or to perform duties outside the lawful scope of a 1:1 paraprofessional. The position does not create a general District-wide nurse paraprofessional classification beyond this student-specific assignment.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and movement throughout the school day. Ability to escort and physically assist a student in classrooms, hallways, buses, cafeterias, playgrounds, restrooms, and other school settings. Ability to lift, transfer, or assist a student and/or equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation, when such duties are part of the assignment and the employee has received appropriate training. Ability to respond quickly to student health, behavioral, or safety needs. Possible exposure to biological hazards, bodily fluids, toileting needs, and medical or emergency situations, with appropriate training and protective measures provided by the District.
