Fleet Maintenance Operations Manager I

Position Summary As an Operations Manager, you will manage the operations and personnel for locations with 1–370 truck units, overseeing Supervisors, Technicians, Customer Service Coordinators, and additional staff. The role requires direct involvement and limited delegation to meet business objectives, financial targets, quality, safety, and asset goals while ensuring compliance with company policies and standard operating procedures. This position is open to individuals who can lead by example and drive results through strong leadership competencies and business metrics. Location & Shift Shop Location: Malta, NY Shift: Monday – Friday, 1st shift Bonus Eligible Travel: 1–10% Safety Sensitive: Non‑Regulated Tech DOT Regulated: No Job Category: Maintenance Essential Functions Operations Management: Responsible for optimizing labor at the shop, ensuring the optimal mix of straight time, overtime, and outside repair. Optimize shift patterns to match supply of qualified technician hours versus equipment availability based on customer operating hours. Conduct work analysis, vehicle planning, scheduling, and assignment of work to technicians. Track productivity, conduct shift and shop meetings, and review and approve repair orders. Oversee execution of the Automated Planning System (APS). Labor Management: Provide management, training, and development of all assigned personnel. Handle performance management, develop and execute the Technical Training Plan with the Field Training Team, prioritize the TOPS plan based on breakdown, rework, and running cost trends, and manage recruiting, hiring, onboarding, payroll, and succession planning. Customer Management: Directly manage customer relationships, issue resolutions, satisfaction, and retention, and ensure vehicle uptime. Optimize vehicle maintenance cycle time and meet or exceed delivered-in-time promises. Execute the Customer Communication Protocol, collaborate with Sales to develop the service requirement section of the Customer Care Plan, conduct customer visits, and maintain customer retention and CSI through the Maintenance Promise. Asset Management: Maintain shop appearance and uphold 6S standards. Execute asset management initiatives, recommend shop tooling and equipment, oversee vehicle specifications and service processes, and manage parts inventory policies and procedures. Coordinate with Rental for scheduling preventive maintenance, utilization, VMI, and wash log. Quality Management: Conduct quality inspections of preventive maintenance and repairs, perform in‑process reviews, lead root‑cause analysis, implement corrective actions locally, and communicate issues to the Technical Assistance Center. Maintain visibility and control over shop floor activities, ensure yield optimization, manage mandatory compliance items, maintain quality metrics, and develop quality assurance audit and continuous improvement programs. Ensure a safe workplace and compliance with safety, state, and EPA regulations. Financial Management: Deliver against net maintenance cost per unit objectives, implement cost control measures, and manage the shop’s budget and P&L statement. Execute maintenance initiatives to meet financial targets, identify preferred vendors, ensure accurate third‑party invoices, manage payroll, purchase orders, invoices, fuel reconciliation, and reserve return activities. Oversee warranty processes and maximize recovery. Ensure data integrity in the shop management online system. Additional Responsibilities Perform other duties as assigned. Skills and Abilities Professionally represent Ryder and interact competently with customer management. Understand labor, financial, operating, quality, safety, and asset processes and related metrics. Strong personal accountability and a proven track record of achieving desired results. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Competent in basic computer skills and Microsoft Office. Prepare reports and analyses for decision making. Intermediate Microsoft Word and Excel skills. Experience with Fleet Management Software. Maintenance and technical experience in a shop environment. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Two or more years of experience in an operations environment or demonstrated success in a Ryder role. One year of supervisory experience required. Compensation Information The compensation offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, including experience, education, location, market data, internal equity, and salary ranges. The position may also be eligible for an annual bonus, commission, and/or long‑term incentive plan based on level and type. Compensation ranges for the position are below.
