Engineer Technician I/II/III

MONO COUNTY

Under supervision, the Engineering Technician performs a variety of paraprofessional engineering, drafting, surveying, inspection, and technical support duties for the Mono County Public Works Department. Responsibilities include assisting with engineering design and construction projects, preparing and maintaining maps and technical documents, conducting field inspections and surveys, processing permits, supporting traffic and erosion control studies, and providing technical and administrative support to engineering staff. Engineering Technicians may assist with project coordination, construction inspection, surveying activities, grant applications, public inquiries, and maintenance of engineering records and drawings. Work is performed in both office and field settings and may involve operating technical equipment, conducting site investigations, and supporting public infrastructure and transportation projects throughout the County. Higher-level positions may provide lead direction, training, and increased responsibility for field surveying and project-related assignments. Successful candidates are detail-oriented, dependable, and adaptable, with strong mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills and the ability to learn and apply engineering principles in a practical setting. The ideal candidate communicates effectively with coworkers, contractors, consultants, and members of the public while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality. They are comfortable using computer-aided drafting software such as AutoCAD or Civil3D, interpreting maps and technical documents, performing field inspections, and supporting engineering and surveying activities in a dynamic work environment. Candidates should be able to work independently on assigned tasks while also collaborating as part of a team. For higher-level positions, candidates should demonstrate increasing technical proficiency, leadership abilities, and the capacity to provide training and lead direction to others. Department Summary The Mono County Public Works Department is dedicated to maintaining and improving the infrastructure and transportation systems that support the safety, mobility, and quality of life of residents and visitors throughout the County. The department oversees a wide range of services including road maintenance, engineering, surveying, transportation planning, land development review, traffic safety, environmental compliance, and capital improvement projects. Public Works staff work collaboratively to deliver reliable public services in a unique rural and mountainous environment while balancing infrastructure needs, environmental stewardship, and long‑term community planning. Experience and Education Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities might be: Level I Entry level work experience toward an engineering, surveying, construction inspection or construction management field. Advanced educational training in mathematical subjects such as geometry, advanced algebra, or trigonometry and pre‑engineering courses in a community college or four‑year college. Level II Two years of college‑level coursework or equivalent work experience toward an engineering, surveying, construction inspection or construction management field.
