The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) seeks a Rehabilitation Therapist 1 (Therapeutic Recreation) to support residents at Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH) in Middletown, CT. Role Overview Provide active rehabilitation treatment through therapeutic recreation interventions, lead and co‑lead treatment groups, implement rehabilitation activities and programs, complete assessments, document progress, evaluate functioning, communicate observations to the interdisciplinary team, and provide therapeutic skills training through individual and group interventions. Examples of Duties Evaluate individualized functioning by assessing behavior and reviewing case histories. Write and implement treatment plans using therapeutic recreation modalities. Conduct individual and group activities, selecting techniques and materials to teach skills. Attend case conferences, participate in admission, treatment, and discharge planning. Observe, record, and evaluate individual progress. Participate in or assist with training programs for staff therapists and students. Use data to develop goals and new activities. Administer and interpret evaluations in specialty areas. Requisition and distribute supplies; adapt equipment. Attend workshops, conferences, and transport individuals to off‑site activities. Perform prevocational activities, plan and conduct special community activities. Serve as a Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional when required. Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles, practices, and application. Knowledge of physical and intellectual disorders and individual/group dynamics. Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Skill in applying therapeutic techniques. Minimum Qualifications Four (4) years of professional experience in a therapeutic recreation program for individuals with intellectual, emotional, or physical disabilities. Substitutions Allowed College training equivalent to 15 semester hours (half a year) may substitute for one year of experience, up to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor’s degree. Preferred Qualifications Experience conducting individual and group treatment in behavioral health and substance use inpatient settings. Experience recording and evaluating client progress, including completing assessments. Special Requirements May be required to possess and maintain a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate and/or CPR/First Aid certification. May be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient with American Sign Language. May be required to travel.
