Works Under The Supervision Of The Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator. The Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and supervises individual patient care on a nursing unit/department according to unit policies and procedures. Provides supervision of non‑RN personnel on the assigned unit. When assuming the charge role, delegates and supervises unit activities. May be required to work on other nursing units according to the distribution of staff and patients. Performs other duties as assigned or requested in order to maintain a high level of service. Units include: Smilow East 5‑5: Sickle Cell/Medical Oncology—specialty unit that provides care primarily to the Sickle Cell Disease patient population as well as the Medical Oncology population with solid tumor malignancies. The unit is equipped with telemetry monitoring allowing close monitoring of these populations. Focused attention on management of sickle cell crisis/pain control, oncologic emergencies, and providing supportive care for disease‑ and treatment‑related complications. NP 11: Hematology Oncology Bone Marrow Transplant—specialty unit that provides care to the most acute patients diagnosed with hematologic disorders (blood cancers) including leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Our team provides state‑of‑the‑art treatment for these diseases including complex chemotherapy and biotherapy regimens, hematopoietic stem cell and bone marrow transplant, CART cell therapy, and numerous clinical trials. NP 12: Adult Medical Oncology—specialty medical oncology unit where a multidisciplinary approach is used to care for patients with solid tumor malignancies as well as hematology oncology overflow patients. Focus is on the administration of chemotherapy & biotherapy, management of oncologic emergencies, and providing supportive care for disease‑ and treatment‑related complications. ECC: Oncology Extended Care Clinic—a unique hybrid urgent care unit that provides triage, evaluation, and treatment for oncology patients in an ED‑like setting. Oncology patients with any primary diagnosis are referred to this clinic for a wide variety of complications, including neutropenic fever, nausea/vomiting, pain, failure to thrive, electrolyte abnormalities, shortness of breath. Patients have a full diagnostic workup completed, are treated accordingly and either discharged home or bridged to an inpatient admission. NP 14: Women’s Oncology—a specialty oncology unit that cares for a diverse population of patients, the largest comprising gynecology oncology patients through diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and biotherapy treatment, side‑effect and symptom management, palliative and hospice care. We also care for hematology oncology patients while receiving elective chemotherapy and radiation oncology patients, both populations inclusive of males. We care for breast post‑mastectomy and flap reconstruction patients after their highly specialized microvascular surgery. NP 15: Surgical Oncology—a post‑surgical unit dedicated to diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of cancer. The unit has multiple service lines including head and neck, thoracic, surgical oncology, urology, and endocrine patients. The unit is equipped with telemetry monitoring allowing close monitoring for post‑operative complications. Our goal is to provide supportive care for our patients including pain management, nutritional needs, rehabilitation, and post‑operative education. Smilow East 4‑7: Sickle Cell/Medical Oncology—specialty unit that provides care primarily to the Sickle Cell Disease patient population as well as the Medical Oncology population with solid tumor malignancies. The unit is equipped with telemetry monitoring allowing close monitoring of these populations. Focused attention on management of sickle cell crisis/pain control, oncologic emergencies, and providing supportive care for disease‑ and treatment‑related complications. Full‑time and part‑time schedules available. Night shift or rotating days. EEO/AA/Disability/Veteran. Responsibilities Assesses the patient’s physical and psychosocial condition on an ongoing basis throughout the continuum of care. Develops, communicates, and documents a plan of care reflecting individualized patient problems and interventions to achieve desired outcomes, involving the patient, family, and healthcare team in this process. Implements and coordinates this plan of care in collaboration with the healthcare team. Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care, patient’s response to care, and readiness for discharge. Revises the plan of care as needed and makes referrals where indicated. Plans for education after assessing the individual learning needs and readiness of the patient and family. Provides educational opportunities and documents outcomes. Functions as a preceptor to new staff. Functions as a charge nurse. Meets performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self‑development as outlined in performance review. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit. Demonstrates competency in the care of the neuro patient. Demonstrates skill and knowledge in neuro assessment. Demonstrates skill and knowledge in the airway management of the neuro patient. Demonstrates skill and understanding in caring for a trached patient. Demonstrates skill and understanding in assisting the physician and caring for the patient during special neuro procedures. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of our “Tia” teaching program. Performs pharyngeal, endotracheal, tracheostomy suctioning according to established policy and procedure. Demonstrates skill and understanding in the use of equipment and care of patient in a halo brace. Demonstrates skill and understanding of nursing responsibilities and interventions for the patient on a ventilator. Qualifications Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred. Experience: N/A. License: Valid State of Connecticut registered nurse license. Special skills: (none listed).
