Veterinarian

Provide diagnostic and regulatory veterinary work to prevent, control, and eradicate contagious and infectious diseases in livestock, farmed cervid, and poultry Oversee livestock markets, sales, auctions, shows, and applicable state and federal rules and regulations Lead program disease efforts in the assigned territory and throughout North Carolina Implement state and federal disease programs, cooperative agreements, tracebacks, education, and outreach Place and release quarantines Investigate possible foreign animal disease reports and potential rabies exposures, including follow-up Oversee livestock issues at state and regional fairs in cooperation with the Emergency Programs Division Ensure compliance with regulations, including farmed cervid inspections, EIA inspections, and proper disposal of dead animals Maintain records, expense vouchers, travel logs, itineraries, and time sheets Direct and oversee the activities, responsibilities, and office duties of three Veterinary Specialists Interact and cooperate with local, state, and federal regulatory officials, public health officials, livestock producers, market operators, and other animal agriculture stakeholders Travel throughout the assigned territory and state as needed Requirements Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the State of North Carolina Knowledge of state and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing livestock disease control and eradication, including farmed cervid herds Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in establishing, applying, and interpreting policies and procedures Ability to establish working relationships with livestock market operators, producers, buyers, local health departments, the public, animal health officials, subject matter experts, and industry representatives Experience in private large animal veterinary practice or regulatory veterinary medicine Knowledge of livestock markets and the livestock industry Knowledge of emergency response principles and procedures related to animals Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing Ability to produce documentation of project results and advise and assist team members Ability to manage subordinate staff and coordinate priorities and responsibilities Must live in, near, or be willing to relocate to the specified North Carolina counties Position requires travel Core Competencies Demonstrates expertise in veterinary medicine with a focus on livestock disease control, regulatory compliance, and effective communication with stakeholders.
