Customs Brokerage Specialist

Responsibilities Provide customers with the highest quality service by delivering consistent customer service and resolution to ensure timely release and/or inbound or outbound movement of freight/cargo. Develop and maintain strong relationships with customers' front line personnel in the various operating divisions and subsidiaries. Prepare, analyze, and submit documentation to the appropriate parties (U.S. Customs, agents, clients) to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations relating to customs and transportation. Anticipate, identify, and resolve problems that could delay the timely release or movement of freight. Maintain relationships with correspondent brokers, T&B, and other service providers so agents exceed customer service requirements. Resolve banking and letter of credit problems, advise customers on payment terms, and resolve billing issues to ensure accurate invoicing and vendor payments. Complete accurate data input or corrections into computer files, obtain payment on delinquent accounts, and complete accounting adjustment forms for review. For transportation customer service reps, develop rates and provide quotes for freight movement, research and negotiate carrier rates, and coordinate post‑entry activity on customers' behalf. Handle high volume and time‑sensitive work, work independently with minimum supervision, and be detail‑oriented. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Proficient computer skills; strong customer service, organizational, and communication (written/oral) skills. Knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations and other federal regulations specific to area of expertise (CHB, air transport, ocean transport, surface transport) as applicable. CHB: proficient in HTS Classification and familiar with the harmonized tariff system. Air transport: knowledge of Department of Commerce & Treasury regulations such as export licensing and Schedule B tariff classifications. Banking requirements for international trade. Regulations regarding dangerous goods shipping & foreign regulations. Ocean transport: BSA, ICC 400/500/322, hazardous materials, Shipping Act of 1984, plant quarantine, USDA regulations, SGS & other independent surveyor & tariff requirements. Surface transport: import/export regulations, DOT. Basic math skills for conversions to metric and currency evaluations. One and a half (1 ½) years of field experience preferred. 12 months of brokerage or transportation experience and/or customer service experience required. MS Office and Outlook proficiency; familiarity with office equipment (phone, fax, photocopier, printer, scanner). Preferred Qualifications Experience with HTS classification and harmonized tariff system. Familiarity with U.S. Customs regulations and specific area of expertise. Desired skill in negotiating carrier rates and resolving billing issues. Pay & Benefits Pay: $25.37–$35.51 USD hourly. Paid training provided.
